Weather Magick (Wiccan)

Among the many powers attributed to witches is the fantastic ability to summon storms, stir winds, and call forth any manner of precipitation as well as to withhold life giving waters to blight crops, and to destroy homes and villages with mighty winds and torrents of rain.

As an agricultural society our continued existence depended (and still largely depends) on knowing the weather in our area. People who stayed in one area over long periods of time noticed the cyclic nature of weather patterns and developed signs and omens to help them predict the weather. One of the most famous atmospheric predictors of the weather used by sailors goes "red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailor's warning." Omens which predict rain include, but are not limited to, the following:

To see a ring around the moon, means rain; in winter it could mean snow.
When the crescent moon is shaped like an upside down U, portends drought.
When the crescent moon is shaped like a U, it means rain.
When the Sun sets behind a cloud means rain.

While some witches looked to the heavens for answers, others looked to the earth for natural predictors. A now famous ritual which takes place in Pennsylvania near the end of every winter entails waiting to see if a ground hog will see his shadow or not to determine the length of winter. Other natural predictors include,

To hear frogs croaking in the evening means rain.
Bird often roost early and eat more just before rain.
Pigs will often insulate themselves before a cold snap.
When cows lied down in a field it portend rain.
When a squirrels tail is very bushy, it portends a harsh winter.

In addition, humans who have broken bones have often discovered that their bones ache right before a storm; human hair is also very responsive to the amount of moisture in the air. When the air is dry, hair shrinks and curls up, however when the air is moist (indicating rain) it swells and straightens out. My own grandmother could always smell the rain coming and sense the drop in temperature or atmospheric pressure right before it rained.

A relatively new belief in the area of weather predictors goes that whenever NASA sends a rocket into space, it will rain. But this is in mainly in the tri-state area around Cape Canaveral in Florida.

When the signs weren't favorable, witches developed spells and rituals to help turn the odds in their favor. Some of the methods witches have used to shape the weather include:

Tying up winds in a rope or string and slowly untying the knots to release the winds. These types of ropes were often sold to sailors in the Middle Ages.
A rather famous spell to call a storm includes dipping a rag in water and beating it against a rock in the Devil's name.
Burn the picture of a deformed or otherwise ugly person and the heavens will cry for them out of pity.
Place the 6th Pentacle of the Moon in water and it will rain as long as the Pentacle remains there.
Dip a broom in salted water and flick it to the four directions to bring rain.
Throwing rice in the air is thought to cause rain. Rice is thrown at weddings to bring good luck to the couple by washing away ill luck.
Among Native Americans, the Rain Dance is a ceremony performed to bring rain and ensure the crops.
Hang a dead snake in a tree and it will rain so long as the snake remains in the tree.
Burning Ferns is said to bring rain as is burning cotton.

As witches, we align ourselves with the particular energy of our area each time we call the elements to our rituals, which I believe is the first step in beginning to manipulate the weather. If we move to a new location, we need to introduce ourselves to the energy patterns of the place in which we live and keep a detailed journal on weather patterns, local lore, etc...

In my personal practices in affecting the weather, I normally stand with my feet together and imagine them as deep roots in the earth. I slowly raise my arms up to the sky and feel the energy of Mother Earth traveling up my feet, spine, arms and out my hands and direct this energy at the sky. Sometimes I hold my hands slightly before me and slowly circle around clockwise. I visualize the rain (or other phenomenon) that is needed, and usually verbalize my goal in the form of a spell. My favorite rain spell/chant is "Ice, Cloud, Storm" which represents the three states of matter as relating to water (solid, gas, and liquid respectively.). So this method is about changing the gaseous clouds to liquid.

In other instances, I have created my own Weather Map. To make a Weather Map, I either purchase a map of the area I want to affect, or print one offline. I then bless it in the name of the area in the same manner I would a Poppet. Next, I re-create the type of weather I need over the map. For example, if I wanted rain I might paste storm clouds over the map, place clear bowls of water on the map, finger paint with water colors ( a great children's activity) or even pour water over the map. For snow or a cold snap, I could dip the map in water and place it in the freezer, or place a bowl of ice on the map. This type of magick is only limited by your imagination.

That being said, the manipulation of the weather is an area of magick which should always be taken seriously, and not without great thought; as changing the weather in one area can have a direct correlation on the weather in another area and can have undesired affects in what has been termed the Butterfly Effect.

Author Denise Alvarado recently announced a writing project in which she and I are working on together so you'll soon see BOTH our names on a special book in a bookstore near you! A second book may just be in the works as well...but you didn't hear that from me. ;)
Some friendships were tested, some failed and those people moved on; however they just made room for true friends.

These are just a few of the exciting things that happened to me in 2011 and I look forward to all the potential opportunities awaiting me in 2012!

Mailbag: Burial of Ritual Remains

Today's question comes from M.B. who writes...

Hi Carolina, I've been spending lots of time on your site and have been getting a lot of information too. Thanks for this site. I however am wondering about the candle disposal. If I don't have a yard at all and live in an apartment, can I dispose of my remains in running water? Or to the east?

Merry Meet,

Thanks for your question. First, let's review the theory and purpose behind the proper disposal of ritual remains. Many people think that a spell is complete once the candle is spent, but this is not the case. A spell is not complete until its magical remains (i.e. candle wax, petition, herbs, etc...) have been properly disposed of. This is especially true in the folk-magic tradition of Hoodoo where disposal of magical remains has a direct symbolical bearing on the work at hand.

The intention of your spell often has a direct correlation on how you dispose of magical remains. Below you will find a general guide-line grouped by intention/goal to help you determine how best to dispose of magickal leftovers.

To Attract Influences- If the work was done to draw something to you such as prosperity, a new lover, or good health, the remains are buried on your property, often near your front door or under your front doorstep.

To Keep and Maintain- If the work was done to keep something with you indefinitely such as a straying lover, the remains are buried in your backyard.

To Move Away- If the work was done to move something away from you such as a jinx, an enemy, or a negative condition, the remains would be buried off of your property. Choices for burial include 1) tossing in running water or 2) burying at a crossroads.

To Increase- If the work was done to create or increase a condition such as prosperity or good health, bury or throw it toward the East so that its strengthen with the rising Sun.

To Decrease- If the work was done to end or weaken a condition such as an enemy's good luck, ill-health, etc.. bury or throw it towards the West so that it will diminish with the setting Sun.

As for your original question, I have no idea what option would be proper in your situation as you failed to explain the goal/intention of your spell. Disposing of ritual remains in running water is done to move something away from you that you wish to be free of, whereas disposing of something towards the East would be symbolic of drawing something to you or to manifest some type of increase in a condition (as in the rising sun).

However, I can tell you that I too live in an apartment. My apartment is on the ground floor and I have a row of bushes along the front of my apartment and a good piece of a backyard including two trees where I am able to bury items. If your apartment isn't on the ground floor, like mine, you have a few options to consider.

Potted Plants- If you don't have a yard connected to your apartment you may want to place potted plants in your home and use them to dispose of ritual remains. However, you will have to make sure that those remains are such that they will naturally break-down in the soil or they will just build up over time. (Note: Soy, Paraffin, and Beeswax candles are biodegradable).

Adopting Land- Find a place which is 1) easily accessible to you and 2) reasonably private which you can adopt to be your special place for disposal of ritual remains.

Storage- This option may be considered unorthodox, but it is one that I have used myself at certain times in my life. Obtain some decorative jars which can be placed on a shelf in an inconspicuous manner. Dedicate each jar to a specific condition (prosperity, love, protection, health). Store your magical remains in its corresponding jar until such time as you feel it is no longer needed or can be disposed of in a more traditional manner.

How to Calculate Your Lucky & Unlucky Days According to the Moon Sign

In the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1 it states that "to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Most rootworkers and spiritual practitioners who come from a Christian background and hold the Holy Bible in esteem have interpreted this passage as meaning that there are certain times more efficacious than others related to their spiritual pursuits.

Most of you reading this are, or should be, familiar with the idea of planning various workings according to the phases of the moon. Generally speaking, workings of increase or of a drawing-in nature (such as prosperity, love, good-health) are performed during the Waxing Moon; when the moon is growing from New to Full. Workings of decrease or moving something away from you (such as hot-footing an enemy, banishing illness, and removing cross-conditions) are done when the moon is Waning, or going from Full to New.

The same concept applied to mundane activities as well. In rural communities, folks were known to plan different farming and agricultural activities according to the moon’s place in the zodiac. Perhaps due to an aversion to using Astrology (as many devout people associated it with fortune-telling and the devil) the signs were referred to as the areas of the body that they ruled, rather than the signs themselves.

Aries, the Head- Initiating action, new beginnings, confronting things, getting in other people’s head, controlling and dominating people and situations, breaking habits.
Taurus, the Neck- money matters, planning long-range goals, public speaking, dental work, putting up preserves
Gemini, the Arms- intellectual Pursuits, juggling task, travel, protection
Cancer, the Chest- attending to family and home matters, weddings, signing agreements.

Leo, the Heart- creativity, protection, love, children, self confidence, good for making large purchases, and doing that that you want to last
Virgo, the Bowels- organizing, analyzing, getting a job, healing, breaking bad habits, buying medicine, healing pets.
Libra, the Kidneys- partnerships of all kinds, marriage, creativity, socializing, diplomacy, writing, contracts.
Scorpio, the Genitals- research, investigation, psychic development, divination, seduction, lust, buying antiques.
Sagittarius, the Thighs- expanding the mind, freedom beginning a diet or exercise program, spiritual pursuits.

For this reason no household was complete without an almanac (an annual book which gives the dates for the phases of the moon, the moon’s place in the zodiac, a tide table, and long-range weather data). Most almanacs have a regular feature called “Best Days” which detail the best time to breed animals, begin potty training a child, plant above ground crops, below ground crops, quit smoking etc…. For example, you would never have a tooth pulled when the Moon is in the Head (Aries) as it runs the risk of hemorrhaging; and a child would be weaned from the bottle when the moon was in the knees (Capricorn).

Many of these folks wouldn’t even think about beginning or ending a chore without first consulting the almanac. Now you too can harness the wisdom of your ancestors by planning important tasks according to the moon’s place in the zodiac.

How to Calculate Your Lucky and Unlucky Days

Calculating your lucky and unlucky days according to Astrology is quite simple. Each month when the moon occupies the same sign as your Sun Sign, is thought to be a fortunate day for you. This is a good day to take chances, sign contracts, buy lottery tickets, etc.

However, when the moon occupies the sign opposite your Sun Sign, this is thought to be an unfortunate day for you, and you should not make any major decisions, etc. on that day. Refer to the chart below to determine your Sign, and Opposing Sign.

With 12 signs of the zodiac and roughly 30 days per month, the moon will occupy each sign of the zodiac for about 2.5 days each month.

On Praying and Prayers

What is Prayer?

Prayer has been defined as communion with God, however, I choose to believe that prayer is actually the act of having a conversation with God. When most people think about having a conversation with God (i.e. praying) they envision themselves talking to him when, in fact, they should do a little more listening than talking. People who pray regularly understand that it helps them to draw closer to God and to know his will and to obey him.

Many people seem to think that prayer is something that you do in a few moments at certain times of the day, such as before meals or at bedtime, and then you are finished. However, the bible states that one should pray without ceasing on all occasion and with all kinds of prayers and requests (Ephesians 6:18). Maintaining constant contact with God in this manner is thought to ward off temptation and evil (Matthew 26:41)

Types of Prayer

People pray for a number of reasons, however most prayers can be categorized into three types.

Prayers in which the individual is giving thanks for his blessings.
Prayers in which the individual is petitioning God for something (protection, guidance, money, a new car, love, health, etc...)either for themselves or for others.
Prayers in which a person is seeking forgiveness for sin.

How to Pray

Many people don't pray, simply because they haven't been taught how to pray. They may struggle for the right words, or they may not know exactly what to pray for. The bible tells us that when we do not know how to pray that the Holy Spirit will pray for us in a manner in which we cannot understand because the Lord knows what is in our hearts and in our minds before we even ask. (Romans 8:26:27)

Our prayers can be either spontaneous from the heart, or they can be a prescribed one such as The Lord's Prayer, the Apostle's Creed, or Hail Mary. Most prayers have four parts. They usually begin with an adoration of the Lord (...hallowed be thy name), followed by the confession of sin (...forgive us of our trespasses...), then our specific petition is made (...give us this day our daily bread), and ending with a statement of gratitude (for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory....)

Elements of Successful Prayer

Remember, it is not so much the words but our attitude and our beliefs about prayer. Successful prayer depends on several factors, they include

Humility (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Whole-Heartedness (Jeremiah 29:13)
Faith ( Mark 11:24)

The bible makes it clear that those who pray in faith will have their prayers answered, one might not always get what they prayed for, but they will get an answer. The bible also tells us that there are hindrances that prevent God from hearing our prayers or answering them. Some of these hindrances include, but are not limited to Sin, Disobedience, and Lack of Faith.

Ultimately, however, one's prayers must be in accordance with the will of God.

Magickal Remedies for Shopping Safely this Holiday Season

Black Friday has come and gone for another year, however, there are still several more shopping days until Holiday---which ever one you observe, or not, as the case my be.

Even now all across the country, and perhaps the world, patrons at various Temples of Commerce offer up the mighty dollar to commercialized-gods in hopes of keeping up with the Joneses; a name, interestingly enough that has become synonymous with “an addiction or fixation for someone or something.” That’s something to think about.

Already there have been numerous reports in the media concerning violence and other unsavory behavior being carried out in pursuit of the next big must-have item that will most likely be forgotten by New Year’s. However, if you are determined to throw yourself in the fray this holiday season then plan ahead so that you can shop securely if not wisely. Some of the tools which will allow you to remain unscathed include, but are not limited to, the following:

Getting Off on the Right Foot

Getting off on the right foot is a very old expression that you probably have heard many times but which you gave little consideration. This phrase has it origins in the ancient Romans who believed that the right side was associated with the male creative power, which protected one from evil. In addition, since the heart was on the left-side of the body, the right-side was thought to be free of inhibiting emotions such as fear or apprehension. The ancient Romans also believed that kindly spirits accompanied a person on his right side and if one should begin a journey or venture on the left foot, that the good spirit would be left behind and an evil one would take its place.

So as you rise in the morning for your day of shopping, be sure to set your right foot on the floor first! Throughout our day, whenever you stop walking and then start again, be sure that you start with your right foot as well.

However, starting out on the right foot means more than this simple gesture. It also means being prepared by doing the following:

Get enough sleep the night before.
Make a list of all the places you need to go and what you need to get there.
Dress appropriately for the occasion (layered clothing, no high heels, etc..).
Allow yourself more time that you think you’ll need in case there are delays.
Make sure you have your wallet, check-book, credit/debit cards, and proper identification before leaving the house. If you plan to make several purchases, be aware that some companies will limit the number of purchases you can make on a certain credit or debit card as well as the number of checks you can write in a day.

These are just a few ways in which you can ensure that your day of shopping gets off to a good start.

Be a Master of Time

Witches have always known the secret to mastering time. When a witch casts his or her magick circle they are creating a “sacred space in a place that is not a place and at a time that is not a time.” What this means is that they are setting their intention in the “here and now” by shutting out all the distraction of the work-a-day world. The witch declares that outside that circle is another world, but within it he is the master and creator of his own world.

Like the witches in their magickal circles you must set you intention by consciously deciding that you will be the master of time and not let time master you! Remember that time only exists because we measure it with our clocks and calendars and feed so much power into the thought of time. To master time, you must strip away the power you have given it by thinking of it as a fleeting thing. Instead of thinking about all the time you don’t have, focus on all the time that you do have.

On the Road

Navigating the roads during the holidays can be a stressful experience. The weather is usually wetter and colder, traffic is usually more congested, and because everyone is so stressed they don’t think about how their negative behavior can affect others or even spiraling out of control causing an accident.

It is the wise witch who wards his or her car and empowers it for safe travel. Ways in which you can empower yourself include, but are not limited to, the following:

Making an offering to the gnomes before you leave your house.
Carrying a protective mojo bag that includes comfrey root, wormwood, and bay leaves.
Hanging a safe-travel talisman from your review mirror.
Visualizing yourself in the center of a bubble of protective energy.
Petitioning your spirit guide or totem animal to protect you on your journey.

When you find traffic moving too slow, or that your way is blocked, use this spell to end gridlock and open up the flow of traffic. Visualize an open road before you and firmly chant:

By Mercury the god of travel,
I command this jam to now un-ravel;

open up the way for me,

to get to where I wish to be!

Once you arrive at your destination you might find a good parking spot difficult to locate. Lucky for you modern city-dwelling witches have come up with just the remedy. I am told that the ritual to Squat has been around for many years and, until recently, was a closely guarded secret. Squat is known as the Goddess of Parking Spots and some writers describe her as looking like a large, African-American female meter maid. To invoke Squat, you chant “Squat, Squat, find me a parking spot.” as you make your way to your destination.

When you get a parking spot, it is customary to leave Squat an offering. Some choices include adding extra time to a strangers parking meter, or leaving an offering of a partially opened chocolate bar on the ground near your car.

Since you’ll likely be going to several different places to shop, it is reasonable to assume that you’ll keep packages in your car. Law-Enforcement officers often put out tips this time of year telling people to make sure their cars are locked, and to keep any packages out of plain sight. You can reinforce your protections by drawing a protective symbol on the car’s doors, trunk, locks, etc…and don’t forget to lave a few Cumin or Caraway seeds in your car to deter theft of your valuables.

Of Products and People

Once inside the store, chances are that its going to be crowded, people are going to be rushed, and impatient. Remember to maintain your calm, and mind your manners. There is nothing in this store worth getting into a physical fight or possibly being killed over. Maintain your circle of protection around you and if you find yourself getting nervous or upset simple chant to yourself:

“I stand in circles of light,

through which no evil can hope to fight!”

If someone does get confrontational or overly aggressive with you, visualize a flaming-blue pentagram on their forehead and mentally chant:

“By this star set aflame,

I banish you in the name;

of universal harmony,

that you no longer trouble me!”

If you desire, you can also make the sign of the horns inconspicuously to reinforce this spell.

With all the extra people vying for the same deals, it can be quite difficult locating a specific product. When this occurs, visualize the specific item in as much detail as you can. See it far away and out of your reach and then bring it closer to you in your mind as you say:

“(Item) is somewhere in this place,

yet I cannot find its trace;

whether it be far or near,

before me now, let it appear.”

Then move on to the next item on your list and you can be assured that you will find what you are looking for before you leave.

If you find that you require assistance from a store employee, but cannot find one simply stand in one spot and say:

“Spirits of commerce,

Spirits of trade;

bid your agent

now come to my aid!”

Now keep your eyes peeled and you’ll soon spot or be approached by a store-employee. When dealing with the employee remember that they are probably under a great deal of stress, are probably working harder and for much longer hours that usual. They are the ones on the front lines, enforcing the policies and rules set down by the corporation. So be patient, be understanding, and focus on making the salesperson your ally and not your enemy.

At the counter, there will probably be long lines. Again, don’t blame the cashier. Try to be patient and use this time wisely to go over your lists and make sure you got everything that you needed or simply stand firmly on both feet, ground and center pulling up a reserve of energy from mother earth. Take some cleansing breaths and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

When you get to the front of the line, have you check, cash, or debit card ready. If you pay with cash, remember to fold it in half and kiss it before handing it over to the cashier so that it will return to you two-fold. If you write a check, you may want to draw a rune for prosperity in the memo column for the same reason.

The Road Home

You’ve made it out the store in tact. Now all you have to do is load up the car and make your way home. But where the hell did you park the car? Relax, this happens to all of us. Just remember the spell to find lost items. It consists of focusing on that which you wish to find and chanting, Jochebed, the name of Moses’ mother over and over again while you search for the item.

Once you locate your items, load up your car and reinforce the visualization for your circle of protective energy. When you get home, unload the car, and give yourself a few moments to rest. Then go to your altar and light a candle to the God and Goddess for their protection and blessings.

Fowl Magic for Money & Love

Wish-Bone

Today, all over America, people are gathering together with friends, family, and loved ones to give thanks for their blessings. As part of the traditional Thanksgiving meal, turkey is often served.

Now the average housewife knows that leftovers, such as turkey bones can be used to make soup stock; however it is the wise and clever witch who can take those bones and fashion a powerful talisman for love or money.

For Money

According to Denise Alvarado of Planet Voodoo, the wishbone can be painted with 18 K gold-leaf paint and placed on your Prosperity Altar to draw money and prosperity to you. If you desire, you can glue a small lodestone to the wishbone and feed it with magnetic sand or money-drawing oil on a regular basis.

For Love

Magic usually makes use of correspondences, things that relate to one another in a way that compliments one's magickal goal. For example, red is associated with love and desire, the new moon is associated with beginnings. Therefore a spell to attract a new love to you may be begun on the New Moon using a red candle. The connection between turkey-bones and love-magic may not be immediately apparent, however, I suspect that it has something to do with the idea that turkeys are dumb animals. There is a long standing belief that a turkey will look up with its mouth open while it is raining resulting in its death by drowning.

How many of us have ever fallen in "love" with another person or become so infatuated with another that every time you were around them your tongue got all tied or you did something dumb either to get him or her to notice you or just because you were so distracted by their presence? Although I cannot find any source to support my theory, I believe that turkey bones are used in love magic to confer some of that dumb-ness to the target of your affections so that they will be more easily swayed to desire you. In addition, I do not think that it is a coincidence that boner is one of the euphemisms for a man's erection. These are just a few associations to consider as you read the spells given below.

In his seminal work, Ozark Magic and Folklore, Vance Randolph writes "Many a mountain girl conceals dried turkey bones about the room in which she meets her lover, or even secrets them in her clothing, in the belief that they will render him more amorous."

If you desire to make use of such a talisman, you can personalize it by writing the man's name on the bone in red ink with a fine-tipped sharpie, or wrap his photograph/personal concerns around the bone and secure it with red thread (red being the color of desire.) In addition, the bone can also be anointed with an appropriate oil such as Love-Me Oil, or Lavender Love Drops (for gay men and lesbians).

To attract a new love, write all the qualities that you desire in a lover on the turkey bone with a fine-tipped sharpie or alternately write them on paper and secure it around the bone with red thread; add this to a mojo bag with lavender buds (which are said to attract men) and coriander seeds (which are said to attract a new love). You may substitute a whole Queen Elizabeth Root for the lavender buds if you wish to attract a female. Anoint the mojo bag with an appropriate oil of your choice.

To sweeten an existing love to you, again write his name on the bone or wrap his personal concerns around it and secure with red thread. When the moon is new on a Friday, place the turkey bone in a honey-jar and burn a red candle on it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to stimulate their desire for you.

To tie a man's nature to you, obtain a piece of red-yarn equal to the length of his erect penis--all without his knowledge. Have sex with him, but do not have an orgasm yourself as you do not want to tie up your own nature. Anoint the red-yarn with his captured semen and tie this around the turkey bone. Wrap the bone in a pair of your own used underwear and keep it in a secure place where no one else will see it or touch it.

To Make Wishes Work

Most everyone is familiar with the wish-bone rite where two people hold on to one end of a wish-bone and pulls the two ends apart making a wish. It is said that the person who gets the bigger piece of the wish-bone will have their wish come true. The origins of this ritual are actually quite old, and have their beginnings with the Etruscans who were known to perform a divination ceremony in which a hen pecks at grains scattered on the ground inside a circle drawn in the dirt.

When the bird was killed, the clavicle-bone was kept and stroked as one made their wish----hence wish-bone. The Romans adopted this practice, where it later passed to the English, but not before they added the rite of two people pulling on the bone that we are familiar with today. This is also believed to be where the expression "lucky break" comes from.

Another method of preparing a wish-bone to bring about one's desires, which can be found in Hex and Spellwork by Karl Herr, is as follows:

Take a wishbone from a chicken or turkey from which you have eaten. Remove all the meat from the bone and dry out the wish-bone, then lay it on a dish or saucer. Wrap the wish-bone's right side with red yarn or thread while making your prayer or petition. Finally, feed the wish-bone ground mullein leaf, sprinkling it over the bone, making your wish and store the it in a dark place where it will not be disturbed as it goes to work for you.

These are just a few ways in which you can conjure up some fowl-magic for money and love.

This blog has been written for all those people who I personally know and have corresponded with over the years (i.e. those who already have my private home address). In the process of writing a short-story, I have recently become interested in Graphology, or the study of handwriting, and will undertake a study of the subject using McNicol's Handwriting Analysis: Putting it to Work for You.

I am requesting that you all, my friends, submit a handwriting sample to me via snail mail. Please understand that, if you agree to send me a sample of your handwriting, don't expect me to return an analysis of your handwriting in return as it is not my intention to provide such a service at this time or in the foreseeable future. These samples will be for my personal use as I study the science of Graphology.

In addition, if you have friends who would be wiling to submit samples of their handwriting to me, then please include those with your own.

If you agree to submit a sample, please keep the following tips in mind:

Write your sample on a piece of blank 8 1/2 X 11 " paper.
Write your sample with a pen.
Write at least two spontaneous paragraphs about anything that you wish.
Use your normal handwriting.
Place a few additional sheets of paper underneath what you're writing so as to prevent any interference in the writing surface affecting your sample.
Finally, sign and date your sample.

Harry Potter Spells in the Real World of Withcraft

The Boy Who Lived

It has now been more than 10 years since the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling which was followed over the years by six additional books telling the story of "the boy who lived". In the summer of this year, Harry Potter and the Death Hallows Part 2 was released on the silver screen (being preceded by 7 movies based on the books) and with that Harry's story comes to an end. Between these moments, there has been both praise and controversy. The author herself has gone from rags to riches, and children all over the world have discovered the love of reading.

I was in my mid-twenties when I first heard of Harry Potter. Both my magickal and my non-magickal friends recommended Sorcerer's Stone to me. However, I saw the book labeled "young-adult" and thought that it was, frankly, a children's story and therefore beneath me. For this reason, I had very little interest in anything Harry Potter and as such never read any of the books and only saw a handful of the movies.

However, within the past month I collected all seven books in the series and read them one by one. I found the first book rather boring as it did feel like a children's book and the fact that I had seen the movie demystified the central plot of the story for me. However, I persevered and found myself being drawn into the universe of Harry Potter with each successive entry into the series. Like so many other fans, I have my favorites (Half-Blood Prince) and those I didn't like so much (Order of the Phoenix). I can see how Rowling grew as a writer over the course of the series. It is very evident that she puts a great deal of thought into her books with regard to foreshadowing, naming of characters, and the writing of her spells, which brings me to the point of this blog.

Readers of this blog will recall that I have an ongoing series of posts titled Magic in Popular Culture (MIPC) in which I take a spell, ritual, belief, etc... from a work of fiction such as movies or books and analyze them for efficacy in the real world of magic and witchcraft. As part of my ongoing experiments in adapting such fictional spells to real world witchcraft I have studied the magick of Harry Potter and observed the following results.

Overview: Intent + Energy = Magic ?

Let me begin by saying that, very simply stated, magick equals energy plus intent. What does this mean? Every spell begins with a purpose or a need which forms the basis of your intent. As witches, we frame our intent in several ways including, but not limited to, the following:

Spoken Words: These may take the form of a rhyming incantation, a phrase in a foreign language, or simply a prayer. The words used will usually include a brief description of the problem or situation and state what is needed or wanted by the caster in order to address the problem. Consider this spell to stop gossip, for example:

Gossip directed at (N's) name,

no longer serves to defame;

those nasty words now shrink away

til they're as gone as yesterday.

Visualization: Visualization is the ability to "see" with the mind's eye that which is not physically present. It is one of, if not the most important, tools available to the witch. I have likened Visualization to a form of Sympathetic Magick. However, instead of creating physical images of one's goal, you make mental ones! Visualization is how we communicate our desires to the Universe. From casting circle, calling the quarters, cleansing objects, casting spells, performing divination, and even healing, visualization is an essential part of every magickal act. Therefore it is the wise witch who hones his or her powers of visualization.

Symbols: In the practice of magick, symbols are often symbolic of our desires. They are found on Tarot Cards, Astrological Charts, and Talismans to name a few. In addition they can be carved onto candles, written on paper, draw in dirt, or even in the air! Symbols also appear in our dreams, and it has often been said that the Universe speaks to us in the language of symbols. It is the wise witch who takes every opportunity to learn to "converse" in this language.

Gathering Correspondences: Correspondences are the relationships that can be used for magickal workings. They make use of the connectedness of things. It is helpful to think of correspondences as a list of possible ingredients from which you can make selections. There are three types of correspondences, they are:
1. Astrological Correspondences- This term refers to the energies of the Moon Phases, Days of the Week, Hours of the Day, and the position of the Moon in the Zodiac, as they pertain to the timing of casting your spells.
2. Natural Correspondences- This term refers to those things occurring in nature which relate to our goals in a direct manner. These correspondences include color, shape, sound, numbers, herbs, incense, gems, elements, animal energies, deity energy, the energy of the cardinal points, the winds, etc….
3. Personal Correspondences- This term refers to those correspondences which resonate with us on a deeply personal level, and which empowers us more than any other correspondence.

Enacting Rituals: Sympathetic Magick works on the principle that ‘invisible bonds connect all things’. Sympathetic Magick can be divided into two categories, Homeopathic Magick and Contagious Magick. The Scottish anthropologist Sir James G. Frazer first described these types in his book The Golden Bough (1890).
1. Homeopathic Magick holds that “like attracts like.” A classic example of this type of magick is the melting of a waxen image of an enemy resulting in his or her death. Visualization is a form of sympathetic magick, instead of creating a physical image of your goal, you are create a mental one. Many taboos come from homeopathic magic. People avoid certain harmless things because they resemble various harmful things. Among the Inuit (Eskimos), for example, parents have traditionally warned their sons against playing a string game, such as cat's cradle, in which children loop string around their fingers. They feared that playing such games might cause the children's fingers to become tangled in the harpoon lines they will use as adults.
2. Contagious Magick holds that “things once in contact with one another continue to exert an influence on one another after they have been separated.” An example of Contagious Magick from a folk magick remedy to cure a wound would be to rub some medicine on the object which caused the wound in the first place. People who believe in contagious magic fear that an enemy can gain power over them by obtaining parts of their body. Therefore, they carefully dispose of their nails, hair, teeth, and even their body wastes.

As we have seen above, one of the ways in which witches frame their intent is through the use of words (either verbal or non-verbal). Similarly the spells in the Harry Potter series, more often than not, take the form of short phrases in either...

One or more foreign Languages (Accio)

Made-Up Words (Muggletum)
Any combination of the above (Repello Muggletum)

With an understanding of what these words are supposed to mean, I believe, the working witch can successfully adapt these basic spells to real word applications.

Accio [AK-ee-o]

Description: This spell is used in the Harry Potter series to call an object to the caster. It is usually cast by saying Accio followed by the name of the object of desire. For example Accio Spoon!

Etymology: The Latin word accio means "I call" or "I summon".

Real World Application: Try Accio when looking for lost objects.

Alohomora [al-lu-ha-MOR-ah]

Description: This spell is used to open and/or unlock doors.

Etymology: Alohomora is derived from the West African Sidiki dialect used in geomancy meaning: Friendly to thieves as stated by J.K. Rowling.

Real Word Application: This spell may be used to break through the protective wards of another witch.

Aparecium [ AH-par-EE-see-um]

Description: This spell makes invisible objects visible

Etymology: Latin apparere, "to appear"; -ium and -cium are common Latin noun endings.

Real World Application: Use this spell to see the unseen (i.e. spirits, fairies, ghosts, etc...)

Bombarda [bom-bar-dah ]

Description: Used to create an explosion

Etymology: Derived from "bombard"

Real Word Application: Again this spell can be used to break through another witch's protective wards, to break through obstacles, and ope the way.

Cave Inimicum [Kah-way ih-nih-mih-kum]

Description: Used to warn of an approaching enemy.

Etymology: a Latin phrase which translates to "beware of the enemy".

Real World Application: Used to charm objects (such as bells) near your front door to warn of enemies, intruders, or thieves.

Colloportus [cul-loh-POR-tus]

Description: This spell is used to magickally lock a door.

Etymology: Perhaps a portmanteau of the Latin words colligere ("gather" or "collect") and porta ("gate"). The Greek root kolla also means "glue" and becomes collo- in many English words. Notably, the spell causes a door to seal itself "with an odd squelching noise". It may also be derived from portcullis, which was used in medieval times as a barricade or last line of defence.

Real World Application: This incantation can be used to ward door/windows to your home, or car as well as the doors to safes and hidden compartments to prevent the entrance of thieves.

Confundo [con-FUN-doh]

Description: Used to confuse enemies.

Etymology: The word "confundus" appears to be derived from the Latin confundere, meaning "to confuse; to perplex", whereas confundo means "I confuse". Similarly, it may also derive from the English word "confound".

Real Word Application: Much like the book version, this spell can be used to temporarily confuse another person though I would recommend saying the incantation while with tracing the Rune Jera as inconspicuously as possible.

Depulso [ De-pul-soh ]

Description: Used in the Harry Potter series to drive away an enemy.

Etymology: rom the Latin “depulsio”, meaning “driving away”. Also is similar to repulse meaning "drive away with force".

Real World Application: This incantation (along with the Mano Cornuto) can be used to banish someone "in your face", low-level spirits, or negative energy.

Episkey [ eh-PIS-key ]

Description: Used to heal minor wounds

Etymology: The word comes from the Greek "episkeui" ("επισκευή"), which means "repair".

Real World Application: Just like in the book, this magick word can be used to heal minor wounds and blemishes by tracing a counter-clockwise circle around the affected area.

Expecto Patronum [ ecks-PEK-toh pah-TRO-num]

Description: A defensive spell used to conjure an incarnation of the Witch's or Wizard's innermost positive emotions to act as a protector against dementors.

Etymology: Patronus means "protector" or "guardian" in Latin, reflecting the role the Patronus Charm plays. The Latin word exspecto or expecto means "I watch for" or "I await", thus the charm's incantation roughly translates into "I await a protector".

Real World Application: This spell can be used, along with strong visualization, to summon an invisible protector in times of danger or fear. The form of the protector will depend on your visualization. I suggest your totem animal, or a figure that inspires protection such as an Angel.

Finite Incantatum [ fi-NEE-tay in-can-TAH-tem]

Description: Used to negate spells or their effects.

Etymology: Latin finire, "to finish": "finite" is the plural imperative form, so it translates to the command, "[all of you] end". Incantatem is apparently intended to recall "incantation"; the Latin verb form incantatum would mean "someone or something enspelled".

Real World Application: Use this incantation (with Hagal or Mano Cornuto) to break minor spells.

Protego Totalum [ prah-TEH-go toh-TAH-lum]

Description: Used in the Harry Potter series to create an impenetrable shield in a given area.

Etymology: Latin protego meaning "to protect" and Latin totus meaning "as a whole"

Real World Application: Used this incantation to cast a circle of protection around yourself, set up a protective ward by drawing a pentagram or Rune (such as Algiz) in the air or on the object to be protected.

Reducto [e-DUK-toh ]

Description: Breaks objects.

Etymology: English reduce, "to bring down;destroy"

Real World Applications: This incantation has several possible uses including penetrating the protective wards of another witch (try drawing the Rune Hagal while invoking the spell), reducing eruptions such as boils and blisters, as well as cursing machinery to break down.

Salvio Hexia [ SAL-vee-oh HECKS-ee-ah]

Description: one of several spells that were used to help strengthen Harry's camp-site, and had no seen effects. Possibly deflects minor hexes aimed at an object (the tent)

Etymology: Possibly derived from the Latin "salveo," meaning "to be in good health," and used as a form of greeting and farewell, and a pseudo-Latin derivative of the English word "hex"—hence, "Farewell, hexes!"

Real World Application: Use these power-words to deflect or destroy minor curses.

Vulnera Sanentur [vul-nur-ah sahn-en-tur ]

Description: Used to heal major wounds.

Etymology: Vulnera Sanentur derives from the Latin vulnus, "wound," and sanare, "to heal"; it is translated "may the wounds be healed.

Real World Application: Use this incantation to heal minor wounds (especially scraps and cuts) as well as to speed up the healing process in regards to major wounds such as broken bones, deep cuts, and cuts associated with surgery.

As you can see the wizarding world of Harry Potter is rife with magic spawned by the imagination of a very clever writer and empowered by the childlike belief of millions of fans all over the world. These are just a few of the ways in which you can harness this power for better living through the magick of Harry Potter!

A witch’s home is her temple and, as such, it should be a haven of refuge and harmony where one feels protected from the destructive forces of nature, man, and the spirits. Working-witches understand the importance of consecrating their sacred spaces during ritual, but often fail to sanctify the very place in which the rituals of daily life are enacted.

The first step in consecrating your home is ensuring that it is clean both physically and spiritually. Cleaning one’s home physically entails mopping floors, vacuuming carpets, sweeping cobwebs from ceilings, wiping down walls, appliances, washing dishes, dusting furniture etc…. all the daily chores that you should be doing anyway. Using spiritual products in conjunction with your cleaning agents can give your cleansing efforts added power. For example, you can add a few pinches of Kosher-Salt to your wash water. When cleaning your house, pay special attention to corners for it is said that evil spirits and negativity like to travel in straight lines and for this reason that often accumulate in corners.

In addition, the removal of clutter is essential for the free flow of energy through your home. The axiom "a place for everything and everything in its place" comes to mind. Finally, it is the wise witch who recognizes the power of discarding those keepsakes which evoke painful feelings and memories such as photographs of old lovers, letter they wrote you, etc….

Once the house is physically clean, it must then be spiritually cleansed. A House-Blessing is typically performed when moving into a new dwelling, and/or for the purpose of cleansing the dwelling, such as after a divorce, a death, or even a prolonged illness. The main function is to cleanse the house of all unwanted energy or beings, to seal portals to the outside world, and to make it a sacred and personal space.

There is no standard ritual for blessing a home, however a very basic blessing can be performed by ritually smudging each room with sage, sprinkling holy-water throughout the house, often in conjunction with ringing a bell or banging on pots with a wooden spoon to drive out evil. The entire ritual should be performed in one day, rather than room by room over a period of time, and renewed four times a year at the changing of the seasons. It can be performed alone, or with those of like mind.

Once your home is both physically and spiritually clean you should feel a definite change in the energy of your surroundings. You home should emanate positive vibrations that uplift the soul and ease the mind. This is not to say, however, that your job is done. The next step in securing your home entails setting up protective wards to seal your home from evil.

Wards can be divided into two types, they are visible and invisible. Visible wards are those wards which take the form of occult-objects such as amulets or talismans, placed strategically around the home for protection. Some examples of visible-wards include but are not limited to the following:

A talisman such as the Square of Sator placed over a door or entrance-way.
Dried herbs hung in the kitchen or over a fireplace.
Salt placed on window sills.
Cumin Seeds or Caraway placed with one’s valuables to deter theft
Crystals or herbs such as bay leaves placed in the corners of a room.
A poppet hung upside down over entrance-ways to trip up thieves.
A sieve placed under one’s bed to protect one from being “hag-ridden”
A “kitchen witch” placed near the hearth to stave off accidents such as house-fires or cutting yourself while preparing meals.
Red Brick dust laid down in a line across your front door to prevent those who wish to bring you harm from entering your home.

Invisible wards are those that a person cannot see (i.e. they are hidden) or which take the form of an innocuous object that are not recognized as having protective powers and which have been put into place to protect a dwelling, seal portals, and deter evil. Some such examples include:

Symbols such as Runes or Pentagrams drawn on doors/windows in Clove Oil or with one's wand, athame, or even just your finger.
Ammonia or Lemon Juice poured down drains and toilets to bar evil from entering through them.
The “Wall of Ancestors” (i.e. a wall near the front door where photographs of deceased loved ones are hung and who are called upon to protect the home from intruders visible and invisible).
A glass of water placed by one’s bedside at night for protection while sleeping.
A mirror or other shiny object which has been charmed to deflect negativity.
A candle burning on the table during dinner.
A Witch-Bottle or Devil-Trap which has been buried on your property.
Wind Chimes that include bells placed outside one’s door or window.
Magickal Servitors created for the express purpose of protecting your home and driving out evil.
A broom beside the front door either on the outside of the house or just inside the door.
Asking one's power-animal to patrol your home while you are asleep or away.
Locks can be spelled with a simple incantation and/or anointed with High John Oil to make them stronger as well as effective against non-physical intruders.
A tea made from tobacco leaves can be sprinkled around the home and its surfaces such as walls and doors washed with it to dispel ghosts and prevent them from entering the home.

Once you have set up these basic wards, your home should then be reasonably safe from most attacks both magickal and mundane. However, it is very important that an attitude of constant vigilance be adopted. Therefore there are a few more guidelines that must be mentioned here to ensure protection and safety in your home. They are:

As a magickal person you will undoubtedly collect various objects of an occult nature such as crystals, wands, tarot-cards, charms, etc… therefore it is important that you ritually cleanse and bless any such object that you intend to bring into your home either beforehand or shortly thereafter. Objects of a negative nature will often give off vibrations that will be picked up by one's subconscious or intuition. They may feel heavy in the hand, they may make you feel uneasy or produce physical symptoms such as headaches. When this occurs, pay attention and act accordingly!
NEVER cast a spell or perform a ritual that calls upon any energy or force with which you are unfamiliar or unsure of. You do not want to invite something into your home that you cannot get rid of or control. Irresponsible use of Ouija-Boards fall into this category as well.
Inviting someone into your home often negates any protections that you have in place, therefore be VERY careful who you invite into your home. If you have to allow someone into your home, such as a repairman, be sure to toss some salt behind them as they leave to that they will not return.
If you intend to have guests in your home for an occasion such as a party or dinner, be sure to remove your personal belongings from your bathroom such as your hairbrush or toothbrush to ensure that they are not stolen to be used against you magickally. I have known witches who collect such coveted possession even from friends “just in case” the friendship should ever go sour.
If you are lucky enough to have a physical animal-familiar or even a "friendly ghost" or any pet that lives with you, do not discount their ability to sense or detect evil that you cannot. When they try to communicate danger to you, PAY ATTENTION.

As you can see, protecting your home and sealing it off from the path of evil is about more than just locking your doors at night. These are just a few ways in which the wise witch can ensure that his or her home, as well as all that it contains, is both safe and secure. Be well.

Anti-Gossip Spell (Wiccan)

Here's a spell design to put an end to gossip and halt the spread of rumors. To perform this spell you will need:

Black Candle
Candle-Holder
Salt
Cloves
Alum

Directions: Begin by flipping the candle (that is, cut off the tip turn it upside down and carve a new tip out of the bottom) and then carving the names of the gossipers on the candle. If there are too many names or you'd simply like to be more comprehensive you can simply write "everyone gossiping about [name/situation]".

Anoint the candle with oil, and place it in a holder. Sprinkle the salt, cloves and alum in a circle around the candle. When you are done, ground and center. Imagine yourself standing in a circle of power. Hold your hands over the candle and raise energy from all around yourself. Imagine the energy gathering above your head in the form of a ball of white light. Mentally move that energy down through your arms and out of your fingers into the candle as you chant the following spell three times:

Gossip directed at [name's] name,

no longer serves to defame;

those spiteful words now fade away,

til they're as gone as yesterday!

Imagine the candle now pulsing with the power that you have channeled from the spiritual realm into the world of man. Light the candle saying "so mote it be" and let the magick go to work.

A Simple Servitor

The Runes are comprised of 24 symbols that represents a plethora of needs, desires, states of being, etc... They can be traced on people, places and things to affect any number of change. For example, trace Fehu (Cattle) on your palm and visualize it glowing with a golden brilliance to attract money to you; alternately you can trace Ehwaz (Horse) in the direction of a difficult person and visualize them being chased away by a herd of wild stallions to move them away from you, or Hagalaz (Hail) to shatter a glamoury. These are just a few ways you can use the Runes in everyday life.
To easily cleanse and protect the home without resorting to smudging (which can often lead to false fire alarms) there are a number of herbs that you can boil in Spring/Holy Water on your stove such as Holly, Cinnamon, Lavender, Rosemary, or Bay Leaves. To do this, fill a pot with water and set it to boil. When the water begins to boil, toss in your chosen herb(s) and say a charm or prayer asking that your home be cleansed of any negativity. You can let the herbs infused water simmer on the stove for hours as it releases it scent into the home. As the scent of the boiling herb(s) drives the evil out, you can set various wards to keep out the evil such as placing a pinch of salt in each window or a charm such as an herb-sachet, the Square of Sator or even a dressed Bat Nut over each door.
The evil eye, or envious gaze, is a look which is believed by many to cause sickness, ill-luck, or some other harm to the person to whom the evil eye is directed. For this reason, many methods have been devised to avert the dreaded look. The Greeks believe that garlic is so powerful, that by simply saying the word ‘skortha’, which is Greek for Garlic, it will avert the evil eye. However, in Jewish culture, it was believed that the evil-eye can be brought down on oneself or another by giving praise or a compliment. To avert the evil-eye and yet still be able to give praise a Jewish person will often say Kaynahorah (kayne-a-hurr-rah), which means "no evil eye", after praising another individual or relating some piece of good information.
In this hectic work-a-day world, many people often find themselves under a great deal of stress. They do not breathe correctly, they do not eat correctly, and they do not get sufficient rest. An easy charm to bring peaceful sleep is as follows: Each night, place a clear glass of water as close to your head as possible so as to collect negativity as you sleep, ward nightmares, and cleanse your spirit. In addition, place a holy book beneath your head. For this purpose I use a small Gideon Bible.
The hands can be used to make certain symbolic hands gestures in order to channel magickal energies. In these cases, positive energy is generated with the right hand, while negative energy is generated with the left hand. Gestures need not be limited to magickal ones to work. There are many gestures used all over the world that often carry a universal meaning. For example, you can cast a money spell by chanting an incantation and making the money-sign which entails rubbing the tips of your thumb, middle and forefingers together. Casting a spell for safe-travel? Invoke the hitchhiking sign. Throwing a minor spell of bad luck on an enemy? Throw the loser sign by forming a reversed capital L with your right hand and place it over your forehead. facing out. Are you trying to get someone to call you? Use the Call Me gesture by placing your thumb to ear and little finger to your mouth as though they were a telephone receiver.These are just a few ways in which you can use universal hand gestures in magickal ways. By using these gestures in our spells and rituals, we are tapping into the world’s shared belief in and understanding of them.
No one has ever become successful in this world without making a few enemies and there are a few simple ways of dealing with their negativity. First you can stop them in their tracks by writing their name on a piece of paper and then tearing it into several pieces. Place each piece in a separate compartment of an ice tray. Fill the tray with water and place it in your freezer calling upon the power of the elements of air and water to freeze your enemy and break up their evil. The second method sends all evil and negativity back to the individual. To do this, cut the tip off of a black candle and turn it upside down. Carve a new tip on this end and set the candle in a holder. Burn the candle on top of a mirror, or the shiny side of a piece of foil, to reflect the evil back to the sender.
Servitors are very basically energy which has been giving a form and assigned a specific task to perform. The more complex the task or purpose, the stronger the witch's will and level of power used to create the servitor must be. Servitors are typically bound to an object to take it out of the realm of thought and into the realm of concrete reality. The object can be anything from a simple symbol to a doll or statue. To create a simple servitor, as opposed to a more advanced one, first choose a photograph that speaks to your need or the task that you wish your servitor to perform. For example, you might choose a photograph of a hound-dog to create a servitor that will find information for you; or a fairy to grant minor wishes. Hold the photo in your hands and give your servitor a name by which you will command it saying something like "I name you [N]. You are [N]." Breath on the photograph and then anoint it with one drop of your blood saying "I breathe the breath of life upon you and feed you this blood to give you strength to [here explain to the servitor what it is that you wish it to do]. Finally, impale the photograph with a pin and say "with this pin, I bind you to this task". When the servitor completes its assigned task, remove the pin and burn the photograph.
Sometimes no matter how much we ward our homes, avert the evil-eye, or send back negativity...it still get through and then we need to cleanse ourselves. The Egg Roll is a form of healing in which a fresh raw egg is ritually passed over a person's body. The purpose of the ritual is to remove curses and blockages, take off negative spirits, and cure spiritual illnesses. After the Egg Roll has been performed, the egg is cracked and its contents dropped into a clear glass of water. The yolk is then observed for signs of the outcome of the work. Common signs include blood, a discoloration, bubbles and threads. A certain level of experience is required to interpret the signs found in the yolk. The Egg Roll may have to be repeated several times for full effect, however many people see relief with only one treatment.
There are times in our lives when we WANT someone to like us, such as an attractive love-interest, or potential friend; and then there are times in our lives when we NEED someone to like us such as a judge, a boss, or potential employer. Luckily, there is a very old type of working called the Sweet Spell to sway a person to like you, to love, you and to want to help you. Begin this spell when the moon is new on a Friday. Write your wish on a piece of paper and place it in a jar of honey, syrup, or jelly. If you have any personal concerns wrap the paper around them as well. Melt a candle to the jar's lid (which should be metal) and light it as you chant : "{N}Sweet, sweet, sweet to me is what I wish for you to be; Sweet, sweet, sweet to me is now what you shall be!" Burn a new candle on the lid of the jar each consecutive Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and make your petition.
Ever meet someone casually but didn't get their phone number or really know anything about them, but you know you want to meet them again? Well this spell is designed to allow you to cross paths with this person again. To begin, pluck two straws from your household broom and name these after yourself and the other individual. If you don't know the name of the other person, simple say something like "the cute boy I met in Wal-Mart on Tuesday" and visualize their face. Cross these two straws forming an X and before this burn a white candle As the candle burns, focus on meeting the individual again and chant the following spell: "Where once was I, there was he; bring forth this one, I wish to see! Continue to focus on your desire visualizing the individual's face in the candle's flame, then allow the candle to burn out on its own. The following day, keep your eyes peeled for this special someone.
For Protection While Traveling Over Land make an offering to the Gnomes by burying a shiny object such as a gem, crystal or stone in the earth outside your home just before you leave on your journey. Chant: I offer up this gift to share, that the Gnomes may hear my prayer & all their protective powers lend, to see me safely to journey's end! So Mote it Be!
A relatively easy, yet powerful, spell to banish another person from your life is as follows. The first Saturday after a full moon, mark a candle with the individual's name. Drive a pin through the candle between each letter in the person's name, dividing the candle into as many sections as there are letters in the person's name. Light the candle and chant: "{N}, as each day this candle wanes, your presence here cannot remain; as light from dark and white from black; go away and don't come back!" Let the candle burn down to the first pin and then snuff out the candle. The following night and each night thereafter as the moon wanes, burn a portion of the candle until it is completely spent.
This is one of my all-time favorite spells. I use it almost everyday. It is designed to get traffic that has slowed or stopped moving again. It even works to move those annoying drivers in front of you out of the way so you can move forward on your journey. It goes as follows, trace the symbol for the planet Mercury before you and say: By Mercury, God of travel, I command this jam to now un-ravel; open up the way for me, to get to where I wish to be!

Divination with Zener Cards

Zener Cards are cards used to conduct experiments for extra-sensory perception, most often clairvoyance. They were invented by parapsychologist J. B. Rhine as an easily statistically measurable, unambiguous way of testing for ESP according to scientific method. Rhine named them in honor of his colleague Karl Zener, a perceptual psychologist. Dr. Zener had selected the five designs that would appear on the cards. When Zener cards were first invented in the 1920s, they were shuffled by hand, but Rhine later switched to having a machine shuffle them.

There are 25 Zener cards in a pack, with 5 cards each of each design. The 5 designs on the fronts of the cards are a circle, a cross in the Greek cross form with each of the four lines being of equal length, a five-pointed star in outline form, a square, and a trio of vertical wavy lines (the "waves"). In order, the cards are: circle, plus, wavy lines, square, star - in the order of the number of lines used. (The star has five points)

When Zener cards were first used, they were made out of a fairly thin translucent white paper. Several subjects or groups of subjects scored very high in early years, but it was soon discovered that the subjects had often been able to see the symbols through the backs of the cards. They were then redesigned to make it impossible to see the designs through the backs under any conditions. A subsequent deck used a back with an illustration of a building on the Duke University campus - but that was a very bad choice, making the deck into a "one-way," which delighted the magicians, who promptly designed tricks that could be done with the Zener cards.

In the tests for clairvoyance, the person conducting a test picks up a card in a shuffled pack, looks at it to verify what symbol is on the card, and records the answer of the person being tested for ESP, who must correctly determine which of the five designs is on the card in question. The experimenter then continues until all the cards in the pack have been tested. A third person may be employed to oversee or videotape the experiment to make sure it is conducted fairly and that all cards are clearly unable to be seen by the subject by visual means. Physical separators may be used between the tester and the subject. Elaborate experiments with Zener cards, just as with other forms of testing for ESP, have been designed that use all ways of keeping the subject unable to see the cards or the face of the experimenter, finding ways for the actual cards and responses to be recorded while the two are in different rooms.

Being that there are five of each of the five symbols, the obvious score expected of someone guessing at chance would be 20% right. The more times a person is tested on a pack of 25 cards, the more statistically meaningful the score becomes. It's quite probable that a person would get 32% or only 12% right by chance on a single trial, but if the subject is not psychic the scores for several runs are expected to average out to 20% over time. A person with budding ESP, or a small but existent amount of ESP -- knowledge of the outside world through something that cannot be explained by the five senses -- would maintain an average of significantly higher than 20% over time. A score of 100% would indicate a world-class psychic -- a person who was perfectly clairvoyant -- or a flaw in the testing method. A long-term average of something significantly lower than what chance would indicate, for instance 8%, might be an indicator of negative ESP.

Zener cards may be used to measure the innate ESP of an individual, but they may also be used to indicate the average scores for groups of subjects being tested. Experiments that test hypotheses about whether ESP can be learned, its connections with hypnosis, its prevalence in different demographic groups, how nutrition affects psychic ability or other general trends may use a target group and a control group and compare the average scores for each group. In this case the degree of statistically significant difference between the averages for the target and control group as well as the general deviation from the 20% norm must be taken into account.

Although Zener cards are usually used to test for clairvoyance, they may also be used to test for telepathy. A subject will draw a card from the deck and will try to mentally project the image of whichever design is on that card onto the mind of another person. Here, the statistical tendency of the person who is supposed to report the telepathic signals to report a specific design must also be taken into account -- perhaps the person "listening" for the telepathic signals has a particular propensity to report squares, for example -- so therefore what percentage of the reported squares were actually cards with squares, what percentage of the reported crosses were actually cards with crosses, etc. must be calculated. Astronaut Edgar Mitchell famously used Zener cards in this fashion in an unofficial experiment during the Apollo 14 mission to the moon in 1971.

A significant departure from the normal use of Zener Cards can be seen in the motion picture The Gift (2000). Directed by Sam Raimi, and written by Billy Bob Thornton (whose mother was a psychic) and Tom Epperson. It is a supernatural thriller, with the main character Annie (Cate Blanchett) becoming involved in a murder mystery as a result of her witnessing the crime with her "second sight, in addition to which, she also gives readings using an old deck of Zener Cards.

When I decided to experiment with using Zener Cards for the purposes of divination, I ordered a deck from Azure Green (www.azuregreen.com). In this deck, the wavy lines are replaced by a triangle and I was also surprised to discover that in addition to the five symbols mentioned above, there were five more cards which consist of a large colored dot. The colors are: Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Black. Therefore my deck of Zener cards consists of 10 symbols of five cards each, totaling 50 cards.

Triangle- The triangle is represents Mercury, expression, communication, travel, healing, manifestation, and will power. The number associated with the triangle is three.

Square- The square represent Venus, affection, love, security, foundation, romance, art, beauty, and pleasure. The number assocatied with the square is four.

Star- The star represents Mars, aggression, responsibility, power, stability, protection, war, guidance and passion. The number associated with the star is five.

The Colors

Red- Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, creativity, energy, hard work, the element of fire, lust, passion.

Green- Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, business, money matters, earth, motherhood, physical health.

Commentary: The use of personal concerns in the practice of magick is based on the theory of contagious magick which states that “things once in contact with one another continue to exert an influence on one another after they have been separated.” The term includes anything that is associated with a person’s physical body either having once been a part of it or having intimate contact to the body, such as urine, hair, fecal matter, sweat, blood, semen, vaginal secretions, etc...

Personal Concerns represent a practitioner's connection to another individual and are used to cast spells for good or evil which are to have an affect on the person to whom they are linked. Generally speaking, the more intimate and personal a link is to the individual the more powerful it is regarded. The most powerful concerns originate inside the body and decrease in strength as you move away from the body.

There are a number of ways in which personal concerns are used in magick, some of which include:

Incorporated into a doll.
Folded into a written-petition.
Included in a mojo bag.
Wound inside a jack ball.
Incorporated into a charm or talisman.
Included in a packet.
Hidden in food.
Sealed in a Honey Jar.

It is known that during the time of the Salem Witch Trials (circa 1692) a person's urine was often employed to determine if they were bewitched, as well as to cure their illnesses. There are two main ways in which this was done. They are:

To determine if a person was bewitched, his or her urine was baked into a cake with some wheat meal and then fed to a dog. If, after eating the cake, the dog acted as if it were bewitched suffering the same symptoms as the individual. In some instances, the cake was thrown into a fire in the belief that destroying the cake would destroy the bewitchment.
The afflicted person's urine was boiled upon a fire along with some crooked pins and then thrown on a fire after a time. In 1654, a cunning woman named Anne Green who resided in Northeast England was said to cure headaches caused by bewitchment by boiling the person's urine on a fire along with some of their hair and then tossing it on a fire, destroying the fire.

As you can see, the "Method for Redress of Fitts" as given above is based on sound principles of magic. However, there is no need to draw the person who bewitched the victim to oneself in order to entreat him or her to remove the spell as destroying the bewitched urine in fire after boiling it for some time was all that was required for relief.

One dark night, while searching her grandmother’s house, Connie finds an old bible pressed inside of which is a key containing a rolled up slip of parchment on which is simply written the name Deliverance Dane. Curious at such a discovery, Connie begins researching the name learning that Deliverance Dane was a heretofore unknown woman accused and put to death for the crime of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.

Connie’s research of historical records indicates that Deliverance owned a receipt-book (a book of things received, such as spells, rituals, herbal-cures, recipes etc..) which she passed down to her daughter upon her death. Sharing this information with Manning Chilton, Connie recognizes the receipt-book as the new source base for her dissertation. Joining Connie on her quest is Sam Hartley, a handsome steeplejack; Liz, her roommate; and Arlo her pet dog. As Connie traces the path of the receipt-book through time she comes to discover her family connection to this magical legacy and must put her faith in the wisdom of the past to defeat a powerful enemy in the present.

The central mystery really draws the reader in and the author does an excellent job of weaving back and forth between the present of 1991 and the Salem Witch Trials (c. 1692); however the observant reader will discern the identity of Connie’s enemy long before she ever does. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is really three stories that cross the boundaries of time and space intersecting at various points. On the one hand you have Connie’s story, set in 1991; and on the other there is the story of Deliverance Dane’s life and legacy set in and around the time of the Salem Witch Trials circa 1692. Finally, there is the path of the receipt-book that changes owners and forms through history.

The author does an excellent job of balancing magic and reality while still honoring the history of the Witch Trials at Salem. I really liked the flavor of magic as practiced by Deliverance Dane and enjoyed the fact that the author chose to use actual practices in the fictional world of Connie Goodwin such as the description of the Sieve and the Scissors for divination and the “Method for the Redress of Fitts” and would have loved it had she included more such examples. If you like magical-fiction with a touch of history, romance, and mystery…then this is the book for you.

True Blood Season 4: Marnie Stonebrook

Well, it's that time of year again and another season of True Blood has come to an end. In previous seasons, we were introduced to Vampires, Fairies, Werewolves, Were-panthers, and Shifters to name a few. Although witches were technically introduced to the show in season 3 with the appearance of waitress Holly Cleary, this season witches were a large part of the major plot, the portrayal of which was met with some controversy from practicing Wiccans.

The main antagonist of the season was Marnie Stonebrook, a witch and medium who owned an occult shop that also acted as a meeting place for her coven, of which Jesus Velasquez and Holly Cleary were members. When we first met Marnie, she was timid, fearful, and quite lonely.

Distressed over the death of her "familiar", Marnie tricks her coven into attempting to resurrect her pet bird and is successful for a brief time which leads her to planning to resurrect a dead human being. However, Bill Compton (now the King of Louisiana,) is tipped off to the coven's activities by a spy he had planted among their number. Fearing the witch's power over the dead, Bill sends Sheriff Eric Northman to put an end to their plans by any means necessary.

When Marnie refuses to give in to Eric's demands, Eric attacks her and as her coven chants a spell of protection, resulting in Marnie becoming possessed by the spirit of a witch (necromancer) named Antonia who died some 400 years prior at the hands of vampires who feared her power. Antonia, working through Marnie, casts a spell on Eric which sends him away and also strips him of his memory.

Having tasted a level of power she heretofore had not been capable of, Marnie attempts to draw the spirit of Antonia back into her through ritual blood-letting. Over the course of a few episodes Marnie learns more about Antonia's life through a series of visions which show how vampires disguised as Priest of the Catholic Church feared the power of witches and used their influence to start the Spanish Inquisition, resulting in Antonia being burned at the stake. As she burned, Antonia cast a spell which drew all vampires in a 20 mile radius into the sun to their deaths.

Each time Marnie is in physical danger Antonia takes possession of Marnie and uses her magic to protect her, such as when she cursed Pam to rot. Only when Marnie is kidnapped and held prisoner by Bill Compton, does Antonia fully possess Marnie allowing her to escape. Marnie, as Antonia, then convenes her coven and attempts to perform the spell to make all vampires meet the "true-death" in the sun.

When her spell fails, Marnie meets with Bill to negotiate peace, however, this results in deaths on both sides and Eric coming under Marnie's complete control. After the death of one of their own, Marnie's coven begin to question her motivations and the wisdom of starting a war with the vampires. Marnie magickally holds her coven prisoner in the Moon Goddess Emporium as she plans her next move. Marnie then plans on using Eric and other vampires under her control to kill Bill at a peace rally, which also fails when Sookie uses her fairy power to break Marnie's hold on Eric.

At this point, Antonia begins to see that revenge will not bring her the peace that she seeks and attempts to leave Marnie, but Marnie convinces her to stay with her and forge ahead. Trapped inside the Moon Goddess Emporium, Marnie's coven begs her to let them go. Marnie revels how her power to communicate with the dead made her an outcast in society and we begin to see that her sense of loneliness and powerlessness is the driving force behind her desire to destroy the vampires. When Casey, one of the coven members, attempts to rush Marnie, she is killed when Marnie telekinetically impales her with an athame. At this point, Antonia sees that she has allowed Marnie to go too far and when she attempts to leave Marnie magically binds her spirit to her so that she can continue to draw from the well of Antonia's magic.

Ultimately, Jesus is able to free Antonia from Marnie's body leaving Marnie powerless and unable to defend herself from the vampires. Marnie is killed by Bill Compton who shoots her in the head. After her death, Marnie possesses the body of Lafayette, another medium, and kills Jesus taking his daemon to add its power to her own. In a climatic battle, Marnie is defeated when Sookie, Holly, and Tara tap into the magic of Samhain to summon the dead to protect them from Marnie. Marnie is forced out of Lafayette's body and convinced by Antonia and Gran to give up her thirst for vengeance and move on to peace in the afterlife.

According to comments left in various forums, many fans felt that making Marnie the driving force behind her own actions (as opposed to Antonia being in control) was not a popular decision. Many people felt that it was completely out of character for the story to go in that direction. However, I disagree. For me, Marnie was a totally relate-able character.

Marnie admitted that people saw her as weak and it was important for her to be seen as strong, to not allow others to dominate, control, or abuse her. She sought out possession to gain a sense of empowerment and when she gained that power it corrupted her. Marnie forged a spiritual bond with Antonia and in the process Antonia's enemies became her enemies. The vampires became all those who hated, ostracized, judged and abused her in her life; and she thought that by destroying the vampires it would somehow give her a sense of resolution.

Many people, myself included, seek out witchcraft to gain more power in their lives. In the early days of my craft, I had to learn that magic does not equal instant gratification. Power, real power, comes to one slowly because you mature through the process so that you don't allow it to corrupt you. And no matter how much power you accumulate, some things are just out of your control. Sadly, Marnie learned this lesson too late.

Pandora: The First Witch

Note: Here's a little story I wrote as part of my magickal series to explain where witches came from. It is not intended to be read as a matter of fact, but rather a legend in the universe of witches I created.

Long, long ago, the world belonged to demons and darkness crouched in every corner of the earth. Mankind in its infancy could scarcely inccrease his number in the face of such oppression. Then one day, the light appeared and drove the darkness into the confines of a book. The light charged mankind with the book's safety, adjuring him to never open the book, lest evil be unleashed upon the world again.

The light walked among men as Gods and a golden age followed. The book was passed down from parent to child with instructions that it was never to be opened. Overtime, it was forgotten exactly why the book was to remain un-opened, but it became a matter of tradition to do so. After passing through a succession of keepers, the book fell into the hands of a young woman named Pandora. For the most part, Pandora took her duty seriously, but in a moment of weakness, she allowed her curiosity to overtake her and she opened the book!

Almost immediately, the world changed as the horror of Pandora's act set in. The people cried out in pain and pleaded for the Gods to intervene. However, they were powerless, since mankind opened the door for evil, he inherited the karmic debt for reconciling evil. The Gods, feeling the world's pain, left this plane for a dimension, where they could observe man and intercede on his behalf albeit indirectly, but still be insulted from his pain.

Before their departure, the Gods gave Pandora the gift of magick with which to oppose evil in all its shifting guises. As Pandora mastered her powers and slayed demons, she wrote about her experiences in the book that once held evil, and which came to be called the Book of Shadows. Eventually, Pandora had children to whom she taught her craft, and they taught their children, and they taught their children. Today, all witches can trace their lineage back to Pandora, from whom they inherit their powers. However, along with the gift of magick, comes the bane of opposing evil in all it's changing forms

My Written-Petition

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to all my followers for not abandoning this page after I had not posted as consistently as I have before. As many of you may or may not know, until recently, I was on unemployment and searching for not only a job, but also a job that would allow me to maintain my present lifestyle or something better.

It took 14 months and I don't know how many prayers, spells, and just plain old begging but as of the last week of July I have returned to the work force. My new job is very physically demanding and after being so inactive for such a long time, dealing with depression, and over-eating...it has been an adjustment to say the least. I have already gone down one notch on my belt and I can see that my clothes are fitting better.

As I continue to adjust to my new circumstances, I will be blogging, working on my websites and writing articles for Hoodoo and Conjure Quarterly as well as The Witch's Hour Magazine -----so please be patient with me.

From the Mailbag: Hoodoo Vs. Wicca

Today's question comes from M.T. He writes,

It seems there is a spiteful prejudice towards those that do practice both Wicca and Hoodoo?

MM, M.T. and thanks for your question.

After the last laws against Witchcraft were repealed in England in the early 1950's, Wicca as a religion has seen several growth spurts roughly every 20 years. Perhaps it reached its peak in the early 90's with the "solitary-practitioner" movement popularized by Scott Cunningham. Around the same time the internet was bring the information super-highway right through our living rooms making information much more readily available to the average person. Wicca achieved mainstream status with movies like "The Craft" and television shows like "Charmed" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

While being Wiccan was a serious religion/magickal practice to many people, it also became something of a fad among teens and young adults for a number of reasons. Some of these individuals were seeking spiritual enlightenment and self-empowerment, others simply jumped on the band-wagon, and others just wanted to look cool. At any rate, when something becomes popular, there is an inevitable backlash. Many popular authors, such as Silver Ravenwolf, became quite controversial as they were seen as having sold out or mislead the public with their information, faked their credentials, etc....

I think that many Wiccans have become disillusioned with their Craft, just like Christians before them. There have been too many witch-wars, too many arguments over whose traditions is older, and whose has a direct lineage or not. The perception is that our spiritual leaders no longer serve the people but rather serve themselves.

I see Wicca as the older sibling and Hoodoo as the new kid that mommy and daddy have brought home. No, I'm not saying that Wicca is older (or better) than Hoodoo, just that many Wiccans may be feeling left out. I've seen many Hoodoo-ers who feel that some Wiccan practices have their origin in African Traditional Religions and some resent that Wiccans don't acknowledge this, especially when Wiccans incorporate Hoodoo into their practices.

Wiccans on the other hand have had years and years of experience with people adopting an eclectic approach borrowing beliefs, practices, and concepts from several places and cultures and weaving these into a highly personal practice within the confines of Wiccan beliefs and theology.

As Hoodoo is becoming more and more popular and mainstream (The Skeleton Key, Supernatural) I believe that a similar backlash is inevitable. It happened with Christianity, it happened with Wicca, and its going to happen with Hoodoo.

We are already seeing what has been dubbed "Hoodoo Wars", we are seeing many arguments over what is "authentic" Hoodoo, and many disagreements over "tradition vs. eclecticism". We are disrespecting our teachers without whom many of us would know squat about these practices. Look at cat yronwode, people either love her or hate her for her work/contribution to Hoodoo; and Denise's books have been stolen a million times over, her name has been dragged through the mud, and people hate her for trying to share her knowledge with the world AND trying to make a living.

Its time to wake up and make positive changes before our egos destroy this beautiful tradition that many of us say we love and respect so much!

All the Wrong Places is a fictionalized account of the author’s own real life experiences as the single mother of a young daughter who just happens to live in a mortuary. The story begins with the protagonist, Casey, driving aimlessly through the dark and rainy San Francisco night with her daughter Maddy in tow after having left her abusive, unfaithful husband, Jerry.

After crashing her car on a hill and having nowhere else to go and no one she can call for assistance, Casey is forced to seek sanctuary at the nearby Golden Oaks Funeral Home. Here she meets Merman, an attractive accommodating man who lives and works at the mortuary and who eventually offers her a job and a home in the form of an apartment above the mortuary. As she acclimates to her new surroundings, Casey meets a handful of colorful characters including Oliver, a handsome doctor with his own story to tell, and Eddie who defies description.

Having secured employment and a home for herself and Maddy, as well as surrounding herself with a network of supporting friends, Casey begins the stressful and arduous process of divorcing Jerry so that she can move on with her life and perhaps find new love. With every small victory she claims, Jerry becomes more and more vindictive and determined to take everything away from Casey, including Maddy, because she dared to defy him.

All the Wrong Places is a story that really draws you in once you start reading. The pacing is even and there were no lulls in the main-plot. The few subplots felt neither unnecessary nor did they detract from the overall story. The author does an excellent job of balancing the bits of humor with the seriousness of the subject matter and in just the right places. The legal aspects of the story seemed quite accurate and Casey’s reactions to the process seemed realistic without going over the top.

Although I enjoyed the overall story, I found some plot points unrealistic in that things just seem to fall into place a little too neatly for Casey. However, since this is a work of fiction I was willing to suspend my disbelief. Had this story been presented as non-fiction, I would have had a bigger problem accepting some of the coincidences. The character of Uncle Stanley, the owner of the mortuary, was noticeably underdeveloped as it seemed he was included solely for creating an outside conflict to match Casey’s inner apprehension about working with the bodies of dead people.

Although Casey was a sympathetic character, she seemed unable to take responsibility for her own part in the dissolution of her marriage and her circumstances. She blamed her distant mother, her over-bearing father, her controlling husband but it was she who ignored what was going on around her. She suspected her husband was cheating, she suspected he was a drug-dealer (as it was implied) but she didn’t care as long as the bills were paid. I also find it hard to believe that as the daughter of a lawyer, who was being groomed to become a lawyer herself, that she wouldn’t have had access to any of their accounts or would sign a contract without reading it beforehand.

All the Wrong Places is not a book that I would have typically chosen for myself to read, as I did not feel that I fit the demographic toward which I felt it was directed. However, the more I read it, the more I wanted to read! As a child of divorce who was raised by his grandparents, I identified with Merman and I could understand why he wanted to help Casey succeed. Despite its few flaws, I really enjoyed All the Wrong Places and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to hear Casey’s story.

Commentary: I have to say that I was excited to receive this product from Madrina Angelique as I thought that it was perfect for a personal issue I had been struggling with for several months.

The soap, which measures approximately 3" X 3", came packaged quite nicely wrapped in a cardboard-like shell and arrived fully in tact with no chips or damage at all. Though the scent, which I can only describe as "clean laundry" was rather strong inside the box, I found that it was more subtle when actually placed in the open space of my bathroom. When used, the Road-Opening Soap lathers up very well and a little goes a long way. This is not a soap that you will use up in a few baths but will actually last you some time.

I have rather sensitive skin when it comes to harsh-chemicals and I found that when applied to my body the Road-Opening soap gave me a tingling sensation on my skin and washed off very easily without leaving my skin overly dry or without the sensation of having a film on your skin afterwards as some commercial soaps do. Once rinsed off and out of my bath, Madrina Angelique's Road Opening soap left me feeling clean, fresh, and renewed. In addition, I found that the scent of the soap lingers on one's skin in a subdued, but pleasing manner.

As for its purported purpose, well for the past few months I've been struggling with depression, lethargy, and a lack of desire to take an active role in the my own life. Since using Madrina Angelique's Road Opening Soap I have begun to feel my energy returning along with a new sense of interest and hope in my own life and future. That being said, I would definitely recommend Madrina Angelique's Road Opening soap to anyone who is facing blockages of either a material or immaterial nature and who sincerely desires to break through them and tread the path of success.

Where There's Fire....

Smoke Detector Covered in Cling Wrap

As working-witches we often have candles and incense burning in our homes and sacred spaces on an, almost, daily basis. This was fine for the witches of yesteryear, but today’s witches, many of whom rent homes or apartments with very specific rules and regulations, have to deal with technology such as smoke detectors and heat sensors in their home as well that prevent them from burning their candles/incense in the way that they would like.

I know many witches who charge and empower their candles at their altar and then move them to burn in their sink, bathtub or even their stove. I’ve done this myself, for safety reasons, when I have needed to burn candles overnight or while I am not home. However, I prefer not to have to move my candles away from the altar when I am awake and in the apartment. There is a reason that we work at our altars, after all.

I am quite lucky that I have a two-bedroom apartment which allows me to have a whole room dedicated to my craft, however the three smoke alarms and one (sensitive) heat sensor are in inconvenient places. I’ve known some people who actually take the battery out of their smoke alarms, however, mine are hardwired into the apartment’s electricity and, frankly it is too much of a hassle to do this every time I need to burn a candle or some incense. It is also directly stated in my lease that tampering with the smoke-detectors in any way would be a violation of my lease and grounds for eviction. Therefore, I’ve had to be creative when coming up with solutions.

To combat smoke-detectors I place shower-caps over them while I am burning candles and/or incense. If you don’t have a shower cap handy, you can use a piece of cling-wrap or secure a plastic bag over the smoke-detector with a rubber-band. Typically when I prepare my magickal-candles they will be anointed with oil and then rolled in a mixture of dried herbs. When lit, the dried herbs can cause the flame to flare up and burn really hot setting off the heat sensor. I've learned that instead of rolling my oiled up candles in the dried herb(s), to sprinkle the herbs in a circle around the candle. This way the candle burns more normally and does not set off the heat sensor.

For safety reasons, always remember to remove the shower-cap when you are done burning your candles and/or incense.

Combine the first five ingredients in a small cloth bag, then add the spell-starter and quickly tie the bag shut. Hold the bag to your heart and say the magic words:

"Darling, darling my true love,

The Beverly Hillbillies

Commentary: Before I analyze this recipe, I'd like to point out that several episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies center around Granny attempting to perform magic with comical results.

In some instances such as "Jethro Goes to College" (original air date May 18, 1966) the recipe above is given but no directions are given as to how it is deployed; however, in "Pygmallion and Elly" (original air date November 28, 1962) the above method of deploying the love conjure is given. Nonetheless, in "The Courtship of Elly" (original air date November 3 1965) the love-conjure is actually burned on an open fire and different magic words are used. They are:

"Magic powder, magic brew,

in the fire and up the flu;

fetch a man and fetch a minister

so poor Elly May won't be a spinster"

When the love-conjure proves too strong, Granny would often blow "Letting Go Powder" in the conjured person's face and say:

"Magic powder white as snow,

make the conjure spell let go!"

In "Jethro Proposes" (Original air date February 28, 1968), Granny prescribes her "Anti-Love Potion X4" which is said to destroy romance between two people. It consist of a foul-smelling mixture worn in a sack cloth about the person's neck. Although no recipe is given, I would imagine it containing asafetida. Although there is a similar tradition of wearing foul-smelling herbs around one's neck to ward off disease, I have never heard of it warding off "love-sickness".

Now to the matter of Granny's Love-Conjure as given above. The following correspondences have been ascribed to the various ingredients.

Angel's Hair (Convolvulaceae) also known as dodder is a traditional herb used in love spells among the people of the Ozarks.
Wild Gander Foot- At first I thought that this was an example of the Herbal Code and referred to the herb known as Goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae). However, I dug deeper and discovered that it is traditional for young men to make a love potion from the powdered web of a wild gander and sprinkle this in a girl's coffee.
Turkey Bones- Like their male counterparts, girls in the Ozarks had their love charms as well. Turkey bones were carried by girls or hidden in their rooms in the belief that they would make a man more amorous.
Moccasin Flower- (Cypripedium)- Also known as Lady's Slipper, the roots of this flower are used to make an aphrodisiac.
Boiled Mistletoe- According to Cat Yronwode, mistletoe was used by European witches to make "true love" powder (along with Verbena and Elecampane) and is used in love-drawing mojo bags to protect against love-jinxes.
Spell-Starter- Within the context of the series, spell-starter is an ingredient that activates a spell and makes it go.I could find no reference to this ingredient anywhere, however, I suspect that it may be saltepeter (potassium nitrate) due to the fact that there were many Saltpeter Caves located in the Ozarks (from which the Clampette's hailed) and the fact that Jethro's love-conjure exploded when he tossed the "spell-starter" into a fire. I liken the saltpeter to the hoodoo practice of blowing one's breath or dropping a match into a mojo bag in order to activate it and get it to working for you.

Within the context of the show, Granny is said to have learned her magic spells and potions from her own grandmother and it is clear that she has unwavering faith in their power. The use of "magic words" are common among Ozark Witches. In some instances they come from the Bible while in other instances their true origin and meaning have been lost over time. Regardless of their origin these magic words are often passed down from one generation to the next and it is the witch's belief in their efficacy that drive them to work.

As you can see, Granny's Love-Conjure is surprisingly traditional and I see no reason why this spell could not be used successfully for it's intended purpose!

The Coffer of Shadow

The coffer-of-shadow is an ornate lead box which resembles a horned-animal with four legs. It appears in the 1984 motion picture Supergirl. At the beginning of the movie it is in the possession of an evil sorceress named Selena, who keeps it in a hidden compartment in the floor near her bed.

When Supergirl accidentally causes the loss of the omegahedron, "a powersource vital to Argo City", she escapes the confines of her home, against her parents wishes, in order to retrieve it. It is explained by Supergirl's mentor, Zaltar, that in addition to providing life-sustaining power for Argo City, the omegahedron has the ability to create the semblance of life, or "a fancy shadow of the real thing."

Through a series of events, the omegahedron lands on Earth where it is found by Selena who believes it to be a powerful talisman capable of allowing her to achieve world-domination. Selena places the omegahedron inside the coffer-of-shadow and quickly learns that it allows her to perform magical feats far beyond that which she is normally capable of.

While on the surface the omegahedron seems to create life, human science cannot explain how the omegahedron works, in fact compared to our present technology it is indistinguishable from magic. However, based on close observation, the abilities listed below can be attributed to the device, though it may have additional powers we have yet to define. They are:

to generate unlimited energy.
to power devices on Earth such as cars, telephones, lights etc…
to convert energy to matter, and matter to energy.
convert one form of energy into another (potential energy into kinetic, etc.)
to re-arrange matter on a subatomic level.
to manipulate and control human biology.
to enable travel between dimensions.
to manipulate all forms of energy such electricity, magnetism, light, gravity, etc….

With these abilities Selena was able to create fire from her fingertip, teleport another person from place to place, summon an invisible construct of her will, animate and control a bulldozer, force a man to love her, banish Supergirl to the Phantom Zone, remotely view people and activities in her mirror from a faraway distance, and conjure material things out of thin air to name a few. As Selena's ambition and power grows the coffer-of-shadow mutates becoming "bigger and uglier" until it resembles the traditional image of Baphomet.

Selena operates the coffer-of-shadow in a few ways. In one instance, she simply places her hands on the coffer, closes her eyes, and focuses on her goal. In another instance she holds the coffer so that it faces an image of her desire (in this case, a man) and calls upon the power inside to "bring him to me." At another point Selena removes the lid from the coffer and directly addresses the omegahedron inside by reciting an incantation to destroy Supergirl. Towards the end of the film, Selena learns to channel energy from the omegahedron into her wand and more directly wield its power.

Ultimately, ofcourse, Supergirl is able to successfully retrieve the omegahedron and return it to Argo City in time to redeem herself and save everyone.

Commentary: Throughout the film, it seems that Selena's flavor of magic is Ceremonial Magic and in that respect I would compare the coffer-of-shadow to the Brass-Vessel associated with Solomonic rites. However, in and of itself, the brass-vessel is not entirely unique among magical practitioners in that it could be compared to the European Spirit-Box; the Govi of Vodoun; the Prenda/Nganga of Palo; the Geni Lamp in Arabic tales; a mojo bag; or even a spirit-doll.

It would be difficult to compare and contrast each of these types of spirit-vessels, therefore I will focus on those things which they have in common. Each object consist of some type of receptacle inside which an additional object, or objects, are contained. In some instances a few of these contained objects are not only traditional but also required. For example, a properly prepared and consecrated Nganga will should always contain 21 sticks from various trees, among other things.

In other cases, that which goes inside a spirit-vessel will depend on the purpose that it is to accomplish. For example, a European Spirit-Box calls for quartz crystal and read thread in addition to anything associated with one's ancestors such as their belongings, grave-dirt, cremation ashes, photos, etc..... On the other hand a Solomonic brass-vessel will often require the sigil of the spirit and a drawing of the spirit, as well as herbs and offerings associated with the spirit. Mojo bags, doll-babies, and spirit-bottles fall into this category as well.

The manners of operation for each of these types of spirit vessels varies from tradition to tradition. However, they each follow a basic order.

An appropriate vessel is obtained and a home is prepared for the spirit inside.
Certain objects are placed inside the vessel that is believed to a) attract the spirit b) ground it on the physical plane and c) provide it with tools it will need to accomplish your goals.
The spirit is ritually petitioned to work with the magician in exchange for specific offerings and/or the ability to evolve on a spiritual level.

The process of creating a spirit-vessel and obtaining a working spirit is arduous and can take a very long time to successfully accomplish. There are dangers present in the process such as incurring a spirit's wrath by making the incorrect offerings, unreasonable demands, or simply disrespecting the spirit. In addition, one must be careful to avoid dealing with trickster-spirits who are not interested in assisting you in your magical work.

Again, offerings will vary from tradition to tradition and from spirit to spirit. Ancestors are often given a portion of the family's meal, while other spirits require only a simple candle be burned nearby its vessel. Mojo bags, and doll-babies, are often offered a few drops of condition oil or whiskey.

That being said I believe that the coffer-of-shadow is a fairly decent depiction of a spirit pot. However, it must be remember that it is a fictional depiction of real magical concepts and operations and that should you attempt to create your own, do not expect to perform the same magical feats as show in this movie.

Tradition vs. Eclecticism

Since Wicca came out of the broom-closet in the 1950's with Gardner, it has been the subject of controversy by outsiders and even others who identify as Wiccans/witches.

The witches of yesteryear put a great deal of emphasis on Tradition. It seemed that you weren't a "real" witch unless you belonged to a tradition or coven. Today's witches have moved away from that belief and have moved toward more eclecticism, picking and choosing their beliefs and practices from various traditions AND even other religions.

In many ways, I think that the eclecticism was a product of the late 80's early 90's with the whole ME generation and the emergence of solitaries. And let's face it, the solitary movement was also fueled by those who felt disenfranchised by the covens. Even during the 80's and 90's there were plenty of circles that did not want to accept members that were gay, non-European (white), etc....and these people had no other choice but to become solitaries to find fulfillment on their spiritual path.

Personally, I think that the eclectic approach did help to keep Wicca/Witchcraft somewhat fresh and helped the new generation of seekers break away from the previous generation and establish their own identity. This king of growth was a natural progression. I don't think there is anything wrong with eclecticism as long as the person has a strong foundation and understanding of basic principles. Without this strong foundation, new seekers can get in over their head. I also think that it is important to be respectful of other religions and cultures from which concepts and practices are borrowed. I compare it to Christians who pick and choose what verses they choose to believe in the bible and ignore those that are contradictory.

Wiccan Spell to Relieve Writer's Block

"Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing as a profession, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work. The condition varies widely in intensity. It can be trivial, a temporary difficulty in dealing with the task at hand. At the other extreme, some "blocked" writers have been unable to work for years on end, and some have even abandoned their careers. It can manifest as the affected writer viewing their work as inferior or unsuitable, when in fact it could be the opposite."

To cast this spell you will need:

Chinese Writing Stone (see photo above)
Yellow Candle
Road Opener Oil
Steady Work Oil (optional)

Directions: In your sacred space, ground and center. When you are ready, cast a circle and then light a yellow candle before you. Hold the Chinese Writing Stone in your hands and meditate on it a few minutes. When you are ready, dab a little bit of Road Opener Oil on your finger and anoint the stone by rubbing your finger over it in a counter-clockwise circle. Chant:

"The page is blank, creativity stalls,

the words refuse to heed my calls;

remove all blocks, the way make free,

as I will so mote it be!"

If you are a professional writer, you may also wish to rub the stone with a bit of Steady Work Oil as well. Place the stone next to the candle and let it remain there until the candle is spent. Thereafter, keep the stone near you when you do your writing.

MIPC: Yarrow Love Potion

They stood in the hall and chatted a few minutes, and then Ruth suggested in a friendly way that they go back to her own room where she had a hot plate and could make some coffee. So they did, and she brewed the coffee and put something in it--I think she referred to the ingredient as 'milfoil,' but I believe it was actually a part of a plant called Achille millefolium. From that night on, as far as I know, Ruth and the basketball player were a steady twosome, and he never looked at the poor little cheerleader again."

Commentary: More commonly known as Yarrow, Achille millefolium, has a long history in medicine as well as magick. Herbalist have used yarrow to promote bleeding as well as to stop the flow of blood from wounds, heal bruises, to bring up phlegm, and treat skin disorders to name a few. It should be noted that contact with Yarrow can cause allergic skin rashes.

In magick, Yarrow has several uses most of which center around drawing love, and fostering psychic abilities. According to Scott Cunningham, Yarrow attracts "love, friendship, and distant relations." He also states that a tea made of yarrow flowers will improve a person's psychic abilities.

In his book, Ozark Magic and Folklore, Vance Randolph states that yarrow is used by women in the Ozarks to make love-potions, however he fails to provide a recipe. The stalks of Yarrow have been used to cast the I-Ching and the flowers have been placed under the pillow to help you dream of your future spouse.

I, personally, would not recommend anyone slip Yarrow into another person's food or drink for this purpose unless they are 1) absolutely sure that the herb is Yarrow 2) that the herb was thoroughly cleaned of any possible pesticides 3) that the Yarrow was properly dried and 4) that they were absolutely sure that they wanted this person to be devoted to them.

All ethics aside, love is a fickle thing. Many a witch has cast a spell to gain the love and affections of someone only to find that once they got their wo/man they no longer wanted him or her. Not to mention how easily love can turn deadly. In addition, once you have your wo/man, you may find it hard to rid yourself of him or her as the grimoires and receipt books provide no antidote to the potion.

However, if you find yourself burdened with an ensorceled-lover and wish to be rid of him or her, Cunningham tells us that pistachio nuts are used in Arabic countries to counter-act love spells. In the Voodoo tradition, one of my teachers shared a powerful spell which calls for the dried remains of a black-widow spider. Still, I would not draw from this well too many times or else you may find that it has run dry and you are forever bound to a wo/man you despise.

I have a very good friend, whom I'll call Jean Grey and whom I've known for about three years. Jean and I worked together for he who shall not be named and, knowing that I am single with no family here in Washington, she always invited me to her home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

After we both left this employer, we continued to socialize together often as well as to talk on the phone at least once a day. It was only within the last year that we each began to notice how in synch we are.

There have been many times when we have been together when we knew what the other was thinking, could finish each other sentences, etc...At other times I would think about her, only to have her call me shortly thereafter. We have never had an argument of fight and often tease each other and bicker like an old married couple. We often joke that if she was a gay man or I was a straight one that we would make a great couple.

Today, while driving to her house for a visit, I began thinking about our connection and wanted to do a little experiment. I wanted to see if I could project a thought to her and have her know what I was thinking. About 15 minutes away from her house, I began visualizing her and projecting the thought "triangle" over and over to her.

When I got to her house, I asked her what she had been doing in the last 15 minutes and she said that she had been on facebook looking at someone's profile. I told her that on my drive over I wanted to see if I could project my thoughts to her and had been projecting the thought of a certain shape to her for the past 15 minutes. She immediately spoke up and said that it was triangle!

However, remember I said that she had been looking at someone's profile on facebook? Well, just before I arrived she was looking at tattoo one of her friends had gotten which took the form of a Eye Within a Triangle! So, that begs the question...was I reading her mind at the time or did I successfully project the thought to her??? Perhaps the world will never know.....

The Thoroughly Modern Medium

In my last entry, I shared a very basic non-comprehensive overview of some of the many different ways in which the living has communicated with the dead. Today I would like to share with you how I discovered this ability as well as the process with which I communicate with the dead.

When I was a small child, I recall having episodes of precognition in which I knew who was calling before answering the phone, or knowing that granpa was being cheated by the butcher. I have a vivid memory of waking up in bed one night and being covered in snakes. I could look off to my left and see my mother sitting on the floor watching tv and eating popcorn but being unable to call out to her. I also recall walking home from school and seeing winged-men flying through the air. I can only imagine what the passing car thought of this small boy standing on the side of the road staring up at the sky.

As I got older and learned not to talk about these things, they stopped happening with any consistency. Despite this, I retained my interest in magick and the supernatural. As a teenager I would lie in bed late and night and listen to the semi-trucks downshifting on Hwy 20 in the distance. I would wonder who they were and where they were going and suddenly I would find myself flying along side them! That was my first experience with astral projection.

When I was 18 I had developed an interest in reading Tarot Cards and tried to create my own deck by using a deck of playing cards and 21 cards from a second deck with the names of the Major Arcana written on them. After I graduated high school, my Aunt E. bought me my first deck (the Rider-Waite) from a Waldenbooks at Myrtle Beach. I spent the whole summer learning the meanings of the cards and doing readings for myself. I vividly recall predicting that Bill Clinton would be our next president (the King of Cups).

In the beginning I took a literalistic approach to reading the cards, because I wanted to do it just right. So whenever I threw the cards I would think, ok the book says this is what the card means and so this is what the card means and nothing else....even though this strict interpretation doesn't seem to fit. Only when I learned to relax and take a more intuitive approach to reading the cards did my own readings improve and my sporadic visions returned.

For example, a girl came to my home one evening for a reading and as soon as I began turning over the card I saw the face of a man in my mind's eye and knew that she was interested in him. Without even thinking or second-guessing myself I called the man's name and she was shocked. Now I must admit that the only reason I knew the man's name was because I was working for the public at the time and this man was one of my customer's otherwise I would have just had to describe who I saw in my mind's eye for the girl.

About a year after I had begun studying and reading the Tarot, I began to feel the presence of spirits when I read for others. I notice that I began to associate their presence with the appearance of certain cards or certain combinations of cards (The World and Judgment together, for example). Once I acknowledged these spirits I was able to begin discerning them and communicate with them. Sometimes the spirit was an ancestor, at other times it was the person's spirit guide/guardian angel. These spirits would then begin to communicate with me by showing me images in my mind and, very rarely, I would hear short words and sentences. At other times I would just know, without knowing. The only way I could describe it is as being similar to when you are working on a problem and then you suddenly get an inspiration and the answer is clear!

I don't consider myself a medium, per se, I am uncomfortable with the idea of allowing a spirit to use my body and am not particularly interested in that type of work. When I do readings and the messages come through from spirits I will deliver the message and leave it up to the client what to do with the information. Occasionally, however, I have been requested to attempt to contact the dead for individuals and I always say that I will try but that I cannot guarantee that I will be successful.

In the beginning I tried working with a Ouija-Board, but for whatever reason I was never able to operate it to my satisfaction. I believe the reason for this is because I have heard all my life about how dangerous Ouija-Boards are and some small part of my subconsciousness will not allow me to operate one. Also, as I said earlier, I am uncomfortable with the idea of allowing some outside force to have use of my body. I have been successful communicating with spirits using the tarot, pendulums, or dowsing rods, but knowing that I have had successful communications with the dead without the use of tools I decided to develop that ability.

Through a process of trial and error, I discovered that the best way for me to communicate with the dead was simply to talk to them. Whenever I get a request to speak with the dead, I usually ask for their name, and/or a photograph. I attempt to put myself on the spirit's wavelength by mentally focusing on the person and repeating their name over and over in my mind as well as visualizing their face. I put out a mental call letting the spirit know that if they are around and wish to communicate, that I am available. There is nothing fancy about it. I don't burn special candles, I don't cast a circle, I don't pray at the altar, etc... I've done this while cooking supper, driving to work, or just laying in bed about to go to sleep. If the person is around and both willing AND able to communicate I usually begin to get mental impressions within 24 ours or so. Once I receive the information I try to write it down so that I can be as exact as possible and relay the information to the client.

For example, I was recently asked to attempt to contact the spirit of a girl who died un-expectantly in a car accident. All I knew was her first name and that she had been on life-support even though she was brain dead and that her family recently made the decision to end life support. I went through my process and about a day later I was driving to visit a friend and began seeing images in my head of colored pencils, blank paper, rainbows, stars, and horses. These images were accompanied by that feeling that I associate with spirit contact and so paid attention to what I was feeling and sensing.

I was able to get a feel for the girl's personality and disposition and when I relayed this information to the individual they confirmed that the girl loved to draw and loved horses and that I accurately described her personality. Later, the spirit of the girl gave me a message to relay to the client that although seemed rather generic, had a personal meaning to her. Though I am leaving out some information out of respect for the family I will share part of the message here.

"Whether you die at 9 or 90 you'll be surprised how fast life passes. Don't waste it living in the shadows and darkness but rather seek out the light and beauty of the world. Enjoy every moment."

That being said, this aspect of spirit-work is not one that I seek out or aspire to do regularly. While some people can be thankful for the message and move on, others desire to maintain contact with the deceased has the potential to interrupt their grieving process and the transitory process of the spirit in question. For this reason I am very selective about who and under what circumstances I perform this service.

Communicating with Spirits

A Basic Guide

As long as there has been religion, there has been a belief in the existence of life after death. However, exactly what the afterlife entails has differed among various religions. Early man envisioned an afterlife similar to the present one. In order to provide for them, the dead would be buried with those items which it was believed they would need in the next life.

Later, the belief developed that the dead could watch over the living and influence their lives. This line of thinking possibly lead to the practice of Ancestor Worship. There are many reasons that one would wish to contact the dead. For some it gives them a sense of closure after the death of a loved one to know that their spirit lives on after death and that the departed is at peace. For some unscrupulous individuals the practice of contacting the dead has become a very profitable business.

Other reasons some may wish to contact the dead is to obtain undeniable proof for their selves that there is life after death. For some this may bring relief, for others it may bring a sense of dread. For if there is life after death, then surely they would have to atone for misdeeds in this life.

While some people seek to contact the dead to strengthen and build ties, others seek to contact the dead to severe them. Many people who feel that their homes are haunted by ghosts often seek to peacefully send the ghost into the afterlife by communicating with the ghost and convincing it to move on. In addition, rituals and practices were developed to honor the dead and request their assistance, or to protect oneself, home, and family from any evil influences associated with the dead.

Spirit communication falls into three main categories, they are:

Divination
Mediumship
Necromancy

Divination

A Seance in Session

Though most people think of divination as fortune-telling, various divination tools can and have been used to communicate with the dead. Some of these tools include, but are not limited to the following.

Spirit House- A spirit house (see photo above) can take the form of a pot, a wooden-box, a jar, or even a doll. The house serves as a dwelling place for a familiar spirit and a means through which the magician can communicate with disincarnate entities. The house usually contains an assortment of items such as graveyard dirt, photograph of the spirit when it was a living person, their death announcement or personal possessions. In other cases the pot may contain a magickal seal associated with the spirit, as well as other items such as herbs, gemstones, and offerings that the spirit is known to favor as well as dirt from a graveyard and/or other locations such as your home, a bank, court-house, etc... These items serve to attract a spirit which is in alignment with your desire and allow it to operate on the physical plane.

Ouija Board

Ouija Boards- Also known as Talking-Boards, Ouija Boards are flat boards marked with all the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0-9 and the words "Yes", "No", and "Goodbye". In fact, the word ouija comes from combining the French word for yes (oui) and the German word for no (ja). To operate the board, it is placed on a flat surface and one or more people place their hands on the accompanying planchette (a small flat wooden or plastic device used as a pointer when operating the board.) Spirits are addressed and it is believed that they spell out words and phrases by moving the planchette through the individuals. Others posit that the channeled information comes from the combined subconscious of those present.

Pendulums- A pendulum is a divinatory tool used to answer subjective questions. It takes the form of a weighted object, called a bob, suspended from a chain, cord, or string. To operate a pendulum it is suspended over a flat surface and a yes/no type question is asked. The direction of the pendulum's swing is then interpreted as yes, no, or I don't know as determined by calibrating the pendulum beforehand. Similar to the Ouija-Board, the pendulum can be used to address a spirit who answers your question though the swinging of the pendulum.

Dowsing Rods

Dowsing Rods- Dowsing Rods usually take the form of a Y-shaped branch of wood, usually willow, or two L-shaped metal rods. While dowsing-rods have been used to find people, places and things (most commonly they are used to find running water for the purpose of building a well) more and more spiritualist are using them to find and communicate with spirits. Typically, the user takes the rods to a place where the most spirit activity is thought to take place. The operator holds the rods up so that they are parallel to one another as they address the spirit. When the rods cross, contact is believed to be made. Once contact has been made, the operator straightens out the rods and then questions the spirit. The spirit is believed to make the rods cross whenever the answer is yes.

Mediumship

A medium is defined as "an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits". A medium typically offers up themselves to disincarnate spirits so that the spirits can communicate with the living using the body and voice of the medium. Although the basic process is the same, there are many different ways in which this occurs. They include, but are not limted to, the following:

Seance- A séance is an attempt to communicate with the dead. The word séance comes from the French word for 'seat', 'session', from Old French seoir, 'to sit.' In English, the word came to be used specifically for a meeting of people to receive spiritualistic messages. The séance, or sitting, is led by a medium who will usually go into a trance that allows the dead to communicate through him or her.

Automatic Writing- Automatic, or Spirit Writing, has been defined as a method of obtaining information from disembodied spirits in which the spirit takes control over the medium causing them to translate unconscious information on paper without being aware of the contents. Automatic Writing is thought to be only used by mediums, however, anyone can learn to use it with practice. The writer is often unaware of what is being written and often even scrawls out text in handwriting that is markedly different than his own. Others believe that perhaps the spirits may also communicate by forming messages in the mind of the medium, which reproduce on the page.

Hynopsis- Hypnosis is a mental state in which a person becomes highly responsive to outside directions and/or suggestions. A person may be inducted into a hypnotic state by another individual or they may induct themselves (called self-hypnosis). Under hypnosis a person is often able to perform feats that they are not able to do in their normal conscious states. Persons under hypnosis have been able to recover lost memories, endure pain, remember past lives, as well as to see and communicate with spirits.

Ritual Possession- Spirits are thought to take possession of a person during certain rites. In Wiccan Rituals, the High Priestess often Draws Down the Moon, that is, invoke the Goddess into their bodies so that she can communicate with the coven. During Vodoun ceremonies, the Loa are said to ride, or possess, participants. While possessed by a Loa, the person is able to do things that they are unable to do in their conscious state such as walk on fire without being burned, or pierce their bodies with large needles without drawing blood, etc... In some Christian churches, worshipers often work themselves into an ecstatic state during which they see visions and speak-in-tongues.

Through Dreams- Dreaming, like hypnosis, is another state of mind in which the living and the dead can communicate. Simply dreaming of the dead does not necessarily make a person a medium, and there is a difference between dreaming of the dead and communicating with the dead through ones dreams. Southern lore states that dreaming of a death is a sign or an impending birth, and people have been known to dream of loved ones long after they have died. The dead will often visit the living through dreams to deliver a final message and this typically occurs soon after the person dies. These dream visitations can happen either once or a handful of times before they stop altogether. However, a person with a talent for contacting spirits through dreams will experience these types of visitations more often.

Necromancy

Necromancy is a form of magick which deals with the ritual raising of the dead in either spirit or physical form. While the use of Ouija Boards, Spirit-Pots, and the performing of a Seance can be considered a form of necromancy, this section will deal with more magico-religious methods of necromancy. Some of these methods include:

High Magick- Also known as Ceremonial Magick, High-Magick represents a complicated set of ideas involving ritual fasting and abstinence as well as preparing ones tools and workspace in strict accordance with proper purification rituals performed at specific times. Typically, the magician will stand within a protective circle and invoke the spirit into a nearby triangle marked on the ground by uttering long incantations calling upon various names of God. Typically the spirit is summoned to answer questions or to lead the magician to buried treasure. The spirit is often tested to determine whether or not it is speaking the truth and threaten with horrors worse than death when it does not.

Low Magick- Whereas High Magick is believed to require a great deal of precision with regard to timing, procedure, and even pronunciation of names; Low-Magick is much more practical in nature and often concerns itself with every-day type goals such as love or money. However, that is not to say that low-magick doesn't offer a few methods of calling forth spirits and communicating with them. A person practicing low-magick may make use of a a tool such as a Ouija Board or Pendulum. Their rituals will tend to be more simple than that of a Ceremonial Magician and may involve something as simple as burning a mixture of Star Anise, Althea leaves, and Acacia leaves to facilitate contact with the dead through their dreams. However, they are just as likely to travel to a graveyard and speak directly with the spirit and negotiate a pact such as an offering of three silver dimes in exchange for the spirits dirt and assistance in a practical matter.

As you can see, there are a plethora of theories concerning and methods involving contact with spirits as well as how to communicate with them. I hope that this brief article has given you something to think about as you seek to communicate with the dead yourself. Tomorrow I will share my experiences contacting spirits and communicate with them in my personal practices.

Court Case Spell

I have not had a great deal of experience with court-case spells but recently had to do some work on my own behalf in this area. Without going into too great a detail, I created this spell out of my own need to win a hearing against a former employer that would determine whether or not I would be able to continue to provide for myself and maintain my present lifestyle. Had I lost this hearing, I surely would have been homeless.

I approached my problem from three angels. They were:

A Honey Jar on the Judge
Curse of Confusion
Freezing My opponents

Honey Jar on the Judge

Please refer to this link for more information about Honey Jars. For this part of the ritual I will add that I was able to google the judge's name and find a photograph of him from the archives of his old law firm, which I included in the honey jar along with calendula flowers and dill seeds.

Since they are notoriously slow-acting, I built my honey jar the same day I learned the name of the judge that would be presiding over my case. I place the honey-jar in front of an image of St. Expedite (thank you Dr. E, for that tip) and petitioned him to speed up the effects of the jar. Each morning, I would burn a newly prepared candle dressed with Fast Luck Oil on the jar and read Psalm 5 while focusing on my desire.

Curse of Confusion

Before I begin to describe my curse, let me explain that these people were bearing false witness against me and I confirmed through divination that my cause was righteous and that it was all right for me to proceed. To perform this spell you will need:

Black Candle
Small Deep Dish
7 Pins
Vinegar
Black Pepper
Red Pepper
Poppy Seeds
Paper and Pencil
Bible

This spell was begun 7 days prior to my hearing date. I begun by writing the names of my opponents and opposing witnesses on individual slips of paper. I placed this paper in the dish and poured vinegar over the names. I sprinkled in the black-pepper, red-pepper, and poppy seeds. Next, I wrote the same names on the black candle and pierced the candle with 7 pins dividing the candle in 7 equal sections (the 7th pin goes through the wick).

I lit the candle and made my petition to the Lord to deliver me from my enemies and then prayed Psalms 35 a total of three times. I let the candle burn down to the top-most pin, snuffed out the flame and then dropped the pin into the vinegar. The following day and each day thereafter I lit the candle and made my petition followed by reading Psalm 35 three times.

The honey-jar and the confusion candle were on my altar at the same time. I placed the Honey Jar on the right and the Confusion Candle on the left side of the altar with a ritual knife in between them with the sharp end of the blade facing the confusion candle.This was done to keep the energies I called forth from contaminating one another and to prevent my opponent from unduly influencing the judge in any way.

On the final day, I lit the honey jar candle AND the last bit of the confusion-candle shortly before my hearing was to take place (over the phone). In addition, after I had read Psalm 35 over the confusion candle for the last time, I took my bible and placed it on a table between myself and the direction of my enemies for good measure.

Freezing the Witnesses

This part of my work was also begun on the same day that I got my discovery package in the mail containing the names of my judge, the people representing my former employer, and the witnesses as well as all the witness statements and evidence.

Again I wrote the names of my opponents and their witnesses on individual slips of paper and attached them to a black cloth doll. I placed the doll on a piece of tin-foil and sprinkled it with a few drops of War Water, a pinch of red-pepper, and some crab-shell powder. I wrapped the tin-foil around the doll (shiny side inward) so that every lie or evil deed my opponents would throw at me would reflect back on them. Finally, I placed the doll in a zip lock bag and placed it in my freeze upside down in a corner.

Divination(s)

Long before I was able to begin my spell-work (I was waiting on paper-work) I received two readings from two other practitioners. Each of them told me that things seemed bleak but that everything would eventually turn out in my favor. I, myself, wasn't so sure and wasn't about to leave anything up to chance and began planning my work.

At one point, I was really scared and looked for comfort from the Holy Bible. I asked my question and opened the bible at random and put my finger down on Acts 24:13 which reads:

"Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me."

It was then that I knew everything WAS going to be ok.

The Results

My hearing lasting about an hour and though I was nervous at first I answered all the questions put to me truthfully. I was able to get some of my opponents evidence thrown out but they were not able to get any of my evidence thrown out.

I knew that my spell was working when not one but two of the witnesses slipped up and basically said that they were lying about their accusations and agreed with my own testimony; in addition the individual who was representing my ex-employer showed that she had no clue what she was doing. The hearing ended and two days later, I received the determination of my case in the mail. I won!

I received my determination over a month ago but am only writing about my experience now because my former employer had until June 16th to appeal the court's decision and they did not do so. I must also point out that I reluctantly confided in some of my magickal friends who did some pro-bono work on my behalf as well. Review: Summer of Fear (1977)

Summer of Fear is one of several stories written by noted author Lois Duncan (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Hotel for Dogs) famous for her young adult novels. It is told in the first-person from the perspective of Rachael, a teenage girl living an idyllic life in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the late 1970's.

Rachael enjoys a loving, close-knit family (including two brothers), a best friend, and a dog named Trickle. Despite her hangups about her curly red hair, Rachael also has a cute boyfriend named Mike, who is literally the-boy-next-door.

Things begin to change for Rachael when her older cousin Julie comes to live with her family after Julie's parents are killed in a car accident in the Ozarks where they had been living. Whereas before Rachael enjoyed being the only young female in the household, she now has to learn to share everything with her cousin, including her clothes, her bedroom, and her friends. At first, Rachael and Julie get along well but Rachael slowly begins to notice strange things about her cousin. First, her southern accent inexplicably comes and goes and then Trickle, who had always been a gentle dog, takes a strong dislike to Julie to the point of biting her which results in his banishment from the house.

As Julie becomes more outgoing, Rachael draws into herself straining her relationships with her family, her best friend, and even her boyfriend Mike, who takes more than a liking to Julie. When it seems that Julie is going to take everything away from her, Rachael investigates her cousin further and finds some surprising inconsistencies as well as evidence that Julie may be practicing black-magic on her, her family, and her loved ones. As the mystery unfolds, Rachel discovers Julie's horrific plan for her and her family.

There really isn't a lot to not like about this book. The characters were all believable and I really felt that the author captured the feel of the late 1970's (which was actually the present when Summer of Fear was written.) The plot was mysterious enough to hold one's interest, although the observant reader will figure out the twist way ahead of Rachael. I liked that the mythology of the story drew upon real-life beliefs and practices found along the Appalachian Trial and that Rachael alluded to the works of Vance Randolph in her research, although it is not explicitly stated. At just over 200 pages, Summer of Fear is a quick read perfect for whiling away a lazy summer day.

Like some of Duncan's other novels before, Summer of Fear was renamed Stranger In Our House and made into a film in 1978 directed by Wes Craven and starring Linda Blair as Rachael and, a then unknown, Fran Drescher as Rachael's best friend. Stranger in Our House first aired on Halloween night in 1978 and later aired regularly on TBS along with other 70's occult movies such as The Spell (1977). In 2003, it was made available on both VHS and DVD.

Luna Strikes

A few days ago, I posted a letter from one of my site visitors (darkladyinthemoon@gmail.com) who felt that I was misinforming my readers. Today, I received the following reply. Please note that the email was sent to me as one long paragraph and so I broke it up into several paragraphs for easier reading, however I left all grammatical errors and misspellings in place.

If u thought THAT was bitchy I wonder how you will take my next questions. 1 how can you call yourself a follower of harm ye NONE if you have spells for children and a section on curses? Did you not study ethics and what it entails? Did your teacher NOT teach you that you are responsible for the reactions to your actions? did you not know that if someone uses your info wrong, or takes it as wicca and someone gets HURT of DIES because a majority of ppl only use ONE site, then YOU are responsible. they are also responsible as it is their choice, but your incomplete info can cause harm in someones reaction.

That symbol ISN'T the "most commonly used". in fact I went searching for it (after I emailed you) as I am well aware of all the "new age" versions of things (and how a lot of ppl who only THINK a wiccan in merely a "good" witch exist). not a single reference to the symbol was found. Not to say their isn't one, just that I don't think you are truly doing your research. If you are so easily offended by a nice way of putting things, I wonder how you will take my lack of sugar. Hears one praise for you though. Your symbol for Uranus was pretty good. I found your site while doing some research of my own (which I usually avoid doing on the internet due to all the fakes and ppl who give "bad" advice and 'facts' that are not facts) on the symbol of Uranus (I actually never use the internet to look up Wicca due to nut jobs and such but I actually didn't notice until your site was on until after clicking... wasn't paying attention.

I admit it, I was irritated after two hours of research and so much BS it wasn't funny, so I didn't even look). Once at the site though I looked through it a little. I did not notice certain things until after the email otherwise it really WOULD have been "bitchy". Just to clear something up. A wiccan in lamens terms in a HEALER and a protector (shield spells and protection spells). If in your options all cause harm, you must look for the least harm in the big picture. cursing is a no no as it is HARM and giving an innocent that kind of responsibility is close to the crime of just destroying them, in fact that is exactly what it is in some cases. Magik is a wonderful thing but in the hands of someone who does not understand what they are doing of the weight of it...

I must wonder for how many innocents (children) you are responsible for the actions of. curses I see too much. a common misconception of ppl who have the "good witch" theology. thing is. you use them? you are NOT wiccan. pure and simple. The only exception to the rule with children is if they are of the stage in life (usually varying from ages 8-12, and never without parental knowledge and consent) where they are prepared in their own mind to decide what they wish to believe and have decided they wish to believe in this path. I chose my path rather young and my brother chose a different one years later. did that make it easy? no. Did my teacher teach me spells right off? HELL no. I was taught ethics first and then asked if I wished to continue. then I was taught healing remedies. THEN I was taught the bare minimum about spells and set unto it with her watching over me and letting me form my own comfortable style. Please note. this teaching style was used due to the highborn natural thing, so I am unsure of how it would work on someone who isn't one. I am not even NOW ready to take on an apprentice. Why? mostly personal reasons. I enjoy learning from others. My lady elder (respectable term for a dear one to me who is a crone as well as a high priestess and a shaman) also looked at your page. In fact I double check with her to see if, in all her years along the path, she had seen the symbol you used for Pluto. nope. that was before I e mailed you.

The next and final thing you need to understand for the total weight of understanding? People DIE. Not just in high magik (usually of the more powerful varieties than what you wrote about... and that isn't something I use anyway), but they die because they are KILLED. Their are still those today who die because someone does LIKE the fact that they are (what is actually only the term since burning times) a "witch" (before the burning times wicca were "village healer"-more common term, "priestess"-less common term unless you were one talking to others, but always respected in those things.) and guess what they do little one? they kill them. do you know why this continues beside some very corrupt ppl in a church somewhere?

site like yours with incomplete or wrong information. every death your site could prevent or has helped cause is also your responsibility. for your sake, I sincerely hope the death I witnessed as a child is not one of them (though I already know it is not). I have studied for years. You have been studying how long young one? I am not meaning to pull the seniority thing (which is annoying in of its own) merely referencing experience level. Still. There are those who have studied longer and know more than me. be more careful with what you put out, and please, either remove your status as "wiccan" or change your site. otherwise I will be informing others and spreading the word because your site is part of the problem. This is not a threat. again. nobody would hurt you.... just make sure others knew your site was not credible as a wiccan site. If you need a reference book for your own studies, a good one author is silver raven-wolf of Scott Cunningham... although before anything else I recommend "Wiccan beliefs and practices" by Gary Cantrell (you need it little one)... and a book about the knights code (this is how one thinks as a healer... minus the fighting... though their is a path today that uses that code in full.. just not Wicca).

Now obviously, this person has not thoroughly read my site because the section on curses contains philosophical information and notes hot to take them off. It DOES NOT contain curses that you can cast on others. The section on spells for children are spells designed to help and to heal them. But don't believe me, click the links and see for yourself.

As I states in my earlier response, I used the symbol for Pluto which I feel is most commonly used today. In fact, the original symbol for Pluto which combines the letter P and L is actually to honor Percival Lowell who is credited with discovering the planet (and yes, I know scientist no longer consider Pluto a planet). Again, I did not forget to include any information at my site (although I know there are places I wish to go back and add information and update old information). I purposefully left out some information, as many writers do, to encourage the seeker to do their own work.

I don't believe Luna's statement that most people use only one site for their information. The current trend in metaphysical circles (which is in itself a controvertible subject) is eclecticism. Today's seeker isn't as interested in adhering to tradition as earlier ones were, but rather pick and choose their beliefs and practices a la carte so to speak.

Out of curiosity, I used the email "Luna" used to contact me to find her on facebook in order to learn a little bit more about this person who keeps referring to me as 'young one'. I won't give her real name, but according to her facebook page Luna graduated from high school in 2007 which would make her about 22 years old.

So, Luna, as YOUR ELDER, I would advise you to tuck your pointy little hat back between your legs and head back to Hogwarts to get your facts straight. Better still, try practicing what you preach. Think about the harm YOU are creating with your negative attitude. YOUR thoughts, WORDS, and deeds come back to you for good or ill, isn't that the Threefold Law?

From the Mailbag: Of Symbols & Sycophants.....

Hi. Thought I should let you know. You forgot to tell ppl that the symbols you put up were not necessarily the only ones. several of them have two or three (most of them actually) other symbols of similar nature. remember. diversity and acceptance is key when taking upon the sacred role of teacher. You actually left out the older symbol for Pluto in particular... so I am just saying. Feel free to contact me. Not bitching, just pointing out something. I will admit though, that picking at the "modernized" version of the path is something I do in my head quite a bit. Your symbol for Pluto also feels a bit off... I can't seem to remember something I should about it (at the moment), but you may wish to double check altogether. modern witches lack old knowledge (a product of the burning times... though a few teachings were taught and are still through the apprentice system). Firstly, your email did come across as bitchy, but I am willing to overlook that considering how easy it is to misinterpret something that is written and not spoken. Obviously you missed the part on my home page where I wrote

While I am aware that there are other symbols for the planets, such as Pluto which originally looked like a combination of the letters P and L, I shared the ones commonly in use today. Symbols, like pictures, can convey any number of meaning and messages and it would be impossible to list them all in their entirety. If those who come to my site want more information they are free to DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH. I did not forget to include any information. I purposefully left out some information, as many writers do, to encourage the seeker to do their own work.

I used to put in hours answering the many emails I get on a daily basis including links and other resources for further study. Do you know how many times I got a response or even a thank you for all my hard work? Never. I feel that I have given enough good information for someone to get a basic idea of the craft and the subjects that I have touched upon. If a person is truly interested in these subjects they will seek out more sources and find their own truth.

I don't know about you but I had to work for everything that I have. Nobody just laid all the secrets to the universe at my feet and I don't see why this next generation shouldn't have to put in the work also.

A Cure for Crusty Cauldrons

Its happened to all of us at one time or another. Either you danced with your coven around a roaring fire as incense smoke rose from your cauldron and a gentle mist filled the night air, or your latest potion seems more fit for unclogging your toilet than making the cute box boy down at the grocery store fall in love with you, so you wash it out and leave it in the sink to drip dry.

No matter how it happened the end result is the same. You have [dum, Dum, DUMMMM] ....crusty cauldron...and now all the other witches down at the covenstead are going to make fun of you. Who does Barbie Witch think she is anyway with her perfect hair and flawless skin? Who died and made her the High Priestess of your Easy-Bake Coven? You've had it up to your pointy little hat with her. You'll show her, you'll show her good! Right? But how?

Well don't fret Wicca Babies, your Uncle Dino has the cure for what ails ya! Take your cauldron outside to a sandy area of your yard. DO NOT do this near any dry grass or leaves. Go to the beach if you have to. Lay the cauldron on the ground and pour some lighter fluid or a bit of rubbing alcohol over it. Strike a match and set the cauldron to burning. Let it burn for a few moments and then gather up some dirt or sand in your hands and toss it on the cauldron extinguishing the flame. Make sure the cauldron isn't hot to the touch and rub the sand all over it.

Don't forget to cackle and mumble to yourself a lot while doing this because you want to be sure to give that nosy old Mrs. Kravitz something to tell her husband about cause, you know, he lives for that shit. When you are done take the cauldron inside and wipe it out with a clean, dry cloth making sure all the dirt/sand is out of it. Pour a little vegetable oil in the cauldron and then rub the entire thing down with it and put the cauldron away to cure. Finally, when Mrs. Kravitz comes over to borrow a cup of sugar and casually ask what you were doing out there just smile and say "oh I've been inside with Tabitha all day, you must have seen my crazy cousin Serena!"

Tools of Conjure

Unlike Wicca or Ceremonial-Magick practices, Hoodoo does not require the practitioner to acquire exotic tools and implements, or to cleanse them with complex rituals at magickally auspicious times.

Hoodoo was born out of the magickal practices of a people who were often denied personal possession beyond what was absolutely needed and so magic was often conjured with what was on hand. For this reason the tools of conjure are, more often than not, common every-day items that can be found in the average household or readily available in nature.

Below is just a list of a a few such items and a brief description of how I've used them magickally.

Screwdriver: I have a Phillips head screw driver that I've used now for a couple of years for the express purpose of carving words and symbols on candles. The thickness is about the same as that of a pencil and the pointed tip is excellent for writing on wax. In addition, I use this candle to drive holes in glass encased candles for the purpose of putting herbs and oil in those holes.

Brass Candle Holder: I have a long brass candle holder the type of which I can unscrew from it's base. You'd probably think that I burn candles in this holder, but you'd be wrong. In fact, I use this candle holder like a candle-snuffer to 'snuff' out candles. I've found that a metal spoon can be used just like a candle-snuffer as well.

Wine-Glasses: Wine glasses that have a flat base can be turned upside down and used like a candle-holder. Other items such as personal concerns, curios, seals, etc..., can be placed under the wine glass as the candle burns down.

Tin Cans: Tin cans can be used for many purposes. I've burned tea lights/votive candles in tuna cans; I've burned petitions and dropped them in tin cans to burn; I've used an engraving tool to engrave magickal symbols on the lids of tin cans that have been removed from the can and carried them as symbols; I've melted wax in tin cans, I've used tin cans as candle molds, etc...

Shoe Strings: I often save the old shoestrings and use them to do cord magick spells for myself.

Saucers: Pillar candles can be burned on top of saucers. In the Hoodoo tradition, saucers are turned upside down and petitions, taglocks, etc... are placed under the saucer while candles burn on top of the saucer.

Stencils: Those plastic stencils that you can get from Walmart, Craft Stores, etc... that have the entire alphabet on them can be used in conjunction with a pendulum for a makeshift Ouija board. Alternately, the alphabet stencil can be placed in a picture frame and a coin or over turned shot glass can be used as a pointer.

Magnets: Some magickal practitioners may not agree with me on this one, but I've often used magnets in place of lodestones in some spells.

Coin Purses: Coin purses can substitute for mojo bags in a pinch.

Coaster: The cork board can be removed from wooden coaster and magickal symbols can be burned into the wood to make a talisman.

Cutting Board: I have a dedicated cutting board that I use as a candle board. I often spread out powders and herbs on this board in which to roll candles in after anointing them with oil.

Ash Trays: Metallic ash trays can be used as braziers for burning incense, or paper petitions.

Picture Frames: I've placed a black piece of construction paper in picture frames and then used the the frame as a magick mirror; in addition I have a paper talisman in a picture frame hanging over the inside of my front door to protect my home and goods from intruders.

Dolls: Action figures and store-bought dolls can be used to house spirits, or named after an individual and used just like a poppet or voodoo doll.

Board Game Tokens: I've often used game tokens such as those used to play monopoly (the shoe, money sack, etc..) or clue (lead pipe, knife, rope) as charms in mojo bags.

Arcade Tokens: The token are often circular and engraved with symbols, that can be magickal with the right imagination. The oldest charm in my medecine bag is an arcade token depicting a wizard throwing off his hat and kicking up his heels in joy and is a reminder to myself to maintain a sense of humor.

Coins: Coins often depict symbols such as animals, luminaries such as the sun or moon, and/or vegetation. These coins can be blessed and carried as talismans. For example I've heard of woman using the Sacajawea coins as talismans to conceive a child, since it shows a woman carrying a child on her back.

Other items you'll find in a conjure worker's cabinet include candles, lead-pencils, brown-paper grocery sacks for writing petitions, chamois/flannel cloth for sewing mojo bags, playing cards for performing readings, dirt from various locations, personal-concerns, doll-babies, condition oils, herbs and roots to name a few.

As you can see, the practice of conjure need not be an expensive endeavor and most items needed to cast spells and make charms are either readily available to the average person or otherwise easily obtainable.

In Search of God....

As a spiritually-minded person, I have had many labels in my life. At one point or another I have identified as a Wiccan, Pagan, Rootworker, Two-Headed Doctor, or some variant. Some of the most common questions I often get include:

What do you believe?
Who do you worship?

When I was a child, I believed that God was an old man with white hair and a long beard who lived in the sky and saw everything that everyone did. We were told that his grace fell upon a virgin who gave birth to Jesus, his "only begotten son" who was also God himself. I was taught that he loved us, but only if we were afraid of him and obeyed his commandments.

When my spiritual journey took me away from Christianity and I found Wicca I was taught that "god" was our Mother AND our Father. Through the cycle of the seasons the Goddess gives birth to the God who grows, matures and becomes her lover; that he impregnates her and dies only to be reborn again. We did not worship them inasmuch as we honored them, and we were empowered to take total responsibility for our thoughts, words, and our deeds.

When I rediscovered the folk-magic practices of the South and began learning more about Hoodoo and Conjure, Jesus re-entered and I had to reevaluate my view and perception of him. Whereas I some magickal practitioners seemed to treat Jesus as some kind of genie, or viewed him as a mythological figure, I see Jesus as the ultimate example of what man's relationship with God can be.

I was recently reminded by a friend that no matter how spiritual you are, people will still question your beliefs. I was somewhat shocked to discover that someone rather close to me, sincerely believed that I was a devil-worshiper. And so it seems, that for several people, the question remains......

What do you believe?
Who do you worship?

And this was my response.

"That which has been called God and will herein be referred to as Spirit is neither male nor female, but rather is both androgynous and asexual, and which exist as pure love. Because we as humans find it difficult to identify with someone or something that is simultaneously male, female, and neuter we attempt to understand Spirit by associating it as one or more of many archetypes, including male, female, and even sometimes animal forms as in Ancient Egyptian and Native American belief systems.

For example, a woman who has been abused by men may find strength and comfort in a divine being who is a Warrior-Goddess; or a gay man wishing to draw closer to God may see him as a beautiful man who loves and accepts him.

Many individuals find it extremely difficult to accept forgiveness and unconditional love, as represented by Spirit. Therefore, rather than take responsibility for our own failings, humans have often painted their concept of God as having traits which we find undesirable within our selves resulting in mythologies that portray God as jealous, petty, and cruel, as well as loving, kind, and generous. Those who are in pain, who blame 'god' for their lot in life or who feel disenfranchised or cast out by society may need to see 'god' as the Satan because they have never experienced true love, or friendship.

All living things from humans to animals, and plants, all the way down to the “lowest” forms of life carries within their self the divine spark which is that part of themselves that is Spirit and which is connected to all living things and seeks to reunite with the original source of this light (the cosmic consciousness).

Spirit experiences what it means to be alive through the divine spark within all life. Spirit shares the full range of human and non-human experience, such as falling in love, being scared, being lonely, being hungry, being happy, being healthy, etc….Through the divine spark in the plants and animals, Spirit knows what it means to be sacrificed as food in order for other life to continue, what it means to be planted in the Earth as a seed, to grow and sprout and join the natural order.

Therefore, Spirit has the highest compassion for every living thing and the desire for all living things to reach their highest potential and to be in harmony with one another."

A Remedy for Retrograde Planets

Each of the seven classical planets (associated with the 7 days of the week) have both a Seal and a Kamea, or Magic Square. Whereas the Kamea sets forces in motion, the seal brings them to a halt.

During periods of retrograde, when a planet appears to move backwards from its normal trek around the sun, those area of life governed by the planet tend to suffer setbacks and breakdowns. For example, Mercury is believed to rule communication and travel and so during a Mercury-Retrograde it is common for breakdowns in communication and interruption of travel plans to occur.

A simple ritual to shield yourself from these negative disruptions is as follows. To perform it you will need the following items:

Square of Planet
Seal of Planet
Pin
Candle of a color associated with the planet
Sharp Knife

Perform the ritual shortly before the retrograde begins. Take a knife and cut the tip off of the candle, then dig a new wick out of what was its original bottom. Draw the planetary symbol on the candle, set it in a holder and light the candle, saying:

"I now sever the ties that bind,

the energies of (planet) to that of mine;

& until s/he resumes his/her normal course

our energies shall remain divorced!"

Next, place the Planetary Seal over the Kamea and secure it with a pin, saying:

"As (Planet) stumbles over

his/her own footprints

I shield my self

from all consequence;

no worries, no troubles,

nor any grief

from these concerns,

I now have relief!"

Place this under the candle and let it remain. When the candle burns out wrap the talisman in a clean, white cloth and carry it with you for protection. When the retrograde end, ritually removed the pin and burn both the Seal and the Kamea.

It is very important that you remove the seal from the square when the retrograde ends, because the seal not only blocks all negative effects of the planet but the positive ones as well; and you will not be able to reap the positive benefits of the planet so long as the spell is in effect.

From the Mailbag: Meeting Your Familiar/Totem Animal

Today's question comes from not one but two different readers, but I'll only be sharing one email submission. He writes:

"Merry meet, my name is Quentin. I've been studying Wicca for almost a year now. I was trying to find out what my power animal was, but I couldn't really find anything I thought fit me. I was hoping you could help me find out what my power animal is."

Kowabunga Dude!

At first I was simply going to refer you to the appropriate section of my website but when I checked I realized that I hadn't written it yet. So this blog entry will serve as a crash course on the subject until I can do so.

Totem vs. Familiar

While these two terms are used interchangeably, I was taught that there is a difference between a totem and a familiar. To begin, a totem is an idea...the essence of a thing with which you or a group of people have an affinity or close connection. They are often represented by some time of physical object such as a doll, a statue, carving, etc...

A familiar, on the other hand, is the physical embodiment of an attendant spirit. For example, my totem is the Turtle (see below) and for this reason I keep a turtle shell on my altar to represent that connection. However I do not have a familiar, that is, a live turtle which keep in my home.

Meeting Your Totem

Rather than tell you how to meet your totem, I'll tell you how I found my own in the Summer of 2002. At my altar, I cast a circle and opened only the Western Gate (the gate of spirit). I invoked the Horned God as Lord of the Animals and petitioned him to help me find my totem.

I then sat before my altar and went into a meditative state. My mind took me to June Creek (a place we went swimming at as a child). I vividly recalls walking along the shore, listening to the sound of the wind through the trees, feeling the sunshine on my skin, etc...I came to a fallen tree and sat down. After a few moments, a giant turtle emerged out of the water and had me crawl on his back.

The turtle took me to an island where he said that he lived. We had a long and deep conversation the details of which I am not permitted to reveal. However, I can say that part of the conversation consisted of him explaining his personal philosophy to me, instructed me how to work with him, and told me his name which I am never to reveal. Finally, he told me that I would receive confirmation of my experience within three days. When we were done, the turtle returned me to the creek and I came out of my meditation.

A few days later, I was going to my mailbox. It had been raining for over a week and my grass had gotten very high. I could not get it cut until it dried out. As I was walking to the mailbox, I noticed a large stone in my yard and went over to pick it up. When I got to the stone, I realized that it was actually a turtle that was seeking higher ground. I gently picked up the turtle and put him down in a safe place.

And that is how I discovered my totem. I have to admit that when I discovered my totem was the Turtle, I was somewhat disappointed. Of course I wanted to have something 'cool' like a wolf, raven, snake, etc...but anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of a snapping turtle's jaws will tell you...don't mess with turtle! I researched the totemic meaning and energies of the turtle and found that it really did seem to fit me.

That same summer I was hiking at 40 Acre Rock when I found a whole, intact turtle shell at the mouth of a bear cave. I took the shell, leaving an offering in its place, which rests on my altar to this day. Since that time I have collected or been gifted with many images of turtles. Whenever I see a turtle or even hear the word turtle, I know that my totem is with me.

Care and Feeding of Your Totem

Having a totem is a large responsibility and like sharing your life and space with any living creature there are certain rules for their care and feeding. They are:

Never get them wet.
Never expose them to sunlight.
Never feed them after midnight.

No wait. Sorry, those are the rules for keeping a Mogwai. It is important to remember that you do not own your totem or familiar. As such, you do not command or abuse your totem; but rather you work with your totem to achieve various goals.

Some of the ways in which you can work with your totem include:

Sending it out to retrieve information for you.
Delivering healing energy to a person in need.
Sending an important message to another.
Charging it to protect your home or possessions while away.
Guiding you on the astral plane.
Warning you of danger.
Borrowing its animal instincts.
Moving negative people or energy away from you.
Finding lost objects or people.
Adding its energy to your own to empower spells.

These are just a few ways in which I have worked with my own totem. As you work with your totem it will communicate with you the best way to call upon and work with it for various goals. It is important to always thank your totem for its hard work and reward it with offerings such as food, candles, etc...

Cross and Candle Spell for Money

Arrange seven nickles in the form of a cross. Place one white candle dressed with Money Drawing Oil on each of the four outer-most coins. Light the candles and Pray the 23rd Psalm (The Lord is my Shepard...) while focusing on your desire for more money.

When you are done, make your petition saying:

"Just as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes so that all were fed, so may my fortune increase so that all my needs are met. I ask this in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen."

Allow the coins to remain undisturbed until the candles burn out and then spend the coins as a "sacrifice" knowing that they will return to you in the form of more money.

Some sources say that white candles are used for a general increase in money, red candles bring money through marriage, and black candles for an inheritance.

Guise and Dolls.....

The use (and misuse) of dolls in magic and witchcraft is an ancient practice. These dolls all work on the same principle of Sympathetic Magic. Sympathetic Magic works on the principle that ‘invisible bonds connect all things’. It can be divided into two categories, Homeopathic Magick and Contagious Magick. The Scottish anthropologist Sir James G. Frazer first described these types in his book The Golden Bough (1890).

Homeopathic Magick holds that “like attracts like.” A classic example of this type of magick is the melting of a waxen image of an enemy resulting in his or her death. Contagious Magick holds that “things once in contact with one another continue to exert an influence on one another after they have been separated.” An example of Contagious Magick from a folk magick remedy to cure a wound would be to rub some medicine on the object which caused the wound in the first place. The most popular and well-known form of Sympathetic Magic is the use of poppets, or dolls.

A doll can be made out of any number of materials from two twigs bound together and covered with Spanish Moss and wrapped in cloth, molded from wax or clay, or even from two pieces of cloth which have been sewn together and stuffed with cotton, moss, herbs, personal concerns, to name a few methods.

An easy, if not fragile, paper-poppet can be created drawing a human-outline on a piece of paper. The poppet is then cut out of the paper and named for the target. If you wish to incorporate color into your doll, you can use an appropriately colored sheet of construction paper to create your paper-poppet. The best paper poppet would be made from a letter written by the target as it would incorporate that person's handwriting or DNA into the body of the doll. Since it is made of paper, you can write the individual's name on the doll, sketch physical features, draw magical-signs and symbols on the body etc...

These kinds of dolls are also great when you're dealing with a faceless institution such as your bank, school, or a government office. Just cut a paper poppet out of their correspondence to you and use it the same way you would use a doll to work on a specific person.

Paper poppets can be manipulated in ways that other dolls cannot. For example, one of my favorite banishing spells calls for making a paper-poppet of an individual and then tearing off a portion of the doll over 7 days as the moon wanes. The torn pieces are burned and the ashes scattered to the winds. In addition, paper-poppets can be rolled up and placed inside vials with a condition oil like Love Me Oil, or Just Judge Oil; or water such as War Water, Peace Water, etc.. depending on your purpose.

To draw a lover, two dolls can be made to represent the interested parties. They can then be "glued" face together in the light of a fixed candle using honey as as an adhesive which serves to sweeten one to the other. The dolls can then be placed in an envelope with love-drawing and attraction herbs and placed under a burning candle, between your mattress and box-springs, or wrapped in your underwear in a drawer with your intimate apparel.

A paper-poppet can be made of an enemy and placed inside a jar of vinegar or lemon juice to 'sour' their life. It can placed inside a freezer bag and placed in the freezer to cool a hot-temper or bind a person's negative behavior. The more heartless practitioner may place the paper-poppet in a jar of dirty water or moist earth. As nature breaks down the paper, the enemy is believed to sicken and die.

If you plan on placing pins in the doll, it might be a good idea to line the back with one or two layers of duct tape so that the pins won't slip out of the doll. If you want to incorporate herbs, powders, etc.. into your work simply turn the doll over face down, sprinkle a bit of your herb or powder on it and then cover with tape. Turn the doll back over and trim the excess tape.

Alternately you can glue the paper-poppet to a piece of Styrofoam like those used to sell pork-chops and other meats at the grocery store. Then use a penknife or box-cutter to trim the excess foam. Be sure to wash the Styrofoam off with warm, soapy water and allow it to completely dry before doing this.

These are just a few ways in which the magickal practitioner can utilize these simple, easy-to-create dolls for use in the practice of magick and witchcraft. As you can see, their use is many-fold and you really are limited only by your imagination.
